I just loaded Beyond Divinity and boy, do the characters move slowly. It is quite "jerky". Is this the way it is suppose to look? Divine Divinity moved much smoother.
Any ideas?

"jerky" => are you in run mode? Your chars run quickly out of stamina and use full brakes then.

Or do you mean mouse control on scrolling? Into the areas where many enemies/creatures/NPC are animated?

I assume, you have patched to 1.45?
Could you tell how many RAM you have, please? I play it with 1024 RAM and only have a slight slowdown when I go into heavily animated areas.

Have you checked for updated video card drivers, etc?
Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game?

Awful Slowdown

Let me start by saying, thank you for replying. Let me also add that you are dealing with someone who is not very computer smart. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> My husband got the computer for gaming. I have no idea how to figure out RAM. Could you let me know how to find out? As for shutting non-essential programs down, I do disable the Norton Anti-virus auto protect. But I have no idea what else should be shut down.
Sorry, I know the forum isn't to teach me how to run a computer, and I think I do ok, but Divine Divinity runs so well, and Beyond Divinity is running so poorly, I keep hoping that it is something wrong with our system and that it's not the game. That would be very dissapointing.
Something else I noticed, I can't zoom in or out of the maps when in auto-map. I'm in the battlefield area. Is this the way it is suppose to be?
Thanks again.

[color:"orange"]I have no idea how to figure out RAM.

In Windows XP, click on Start | Control Panel, then click on 'switch to classic view' (if necessary) and double click on the System icon. There may be an easier way to get the amount of RAM, and your husband is probably more familiar with the system specs. Since the computer was bought for gaming, if it is not more than a couple years old it should probably have sufficient RAM.

While you are in the System control panel applet, you can click on the 'Hardware' tab, then the 'Device manager' button to check what type of video card you have, listed under 'display adapters'. There may be updated drivers available from the Windows Update site (the service pack and latest critical updates help with BD problems, as well), or you can check directly with the chipset manufacturer, likely ATI (Radeon) or NVidia (GeForce).

[color:"orange"]But I have no idea what else should be shut down.

Anything you do not need running, and many of the things that minimizes to the system tray (by the clock) can be shut down. This includes, email or IM programs, web browsers, wallpaper changers, MS Office quick search indexing 'feature', multimedia players, etc.

The most common effect of running too many background programs would be forcing the game to use the swap file on the hard drive more often (which is much slower than RAM). This would result in occasional slowdowns and pauses, especially with a lot of NPCs, etc on screen, but should not cause a consistent, severe slowdown, I don't think.

The characters in BD do run a little slower than DD at the start of the game, but there shouldn't be an extreme difference.

[color:"orange"]I can't zoom in or out of the maps when in auto-map. I'm in the battlefield area.

Zooming was not implemented in the BF, since the dungeons are randomly generated.

We have 512.0 MB RAM. Is that enough? I've run the Microsoft update and there was nothing to update. I'm hoping another patch is in the works because I just love this game - so far.
Thanks

That should be enough RAM.
