by the way, if you want to deal massive crit damage, try playing a str-based human barb/wm. i think you can be a wm by lvl 13. weapon focus in greataxe. upgrade it to keen. you will have a crit threat of x4. combined w/ massive str (dump all attribute pts into str, wear str-enhancing belts, gloves, etc), the damage is insane. in chap 3, i dealt a crit dmg of almost/over 200. if you get hold of axe of the culling (easily found very early in the game), the game will be a breeze. that greataxe has a powerful dispel magic ability, quite similar to the holy avenger (usable only by a paladin).
you can also get scythe as a weapon of choice, and get a crit threat of x5. but that would require an extra feat, which a barb is strapped of.

thanks for the many tips, crusader, womble & winterfox.
looks like the three of u have your fav builds. i would love to play 'by-the-book' pallie again. just that i'm not too sure what build i should go for. oh well, the only way to tell the deepness of a well is by jumping into one.
wish i can talk my enemies to death.
crusader, just how tricky is arcane archer when playing in close quarters? there are a lot of such places in HotU with blind sights.
actually for monk, once u get to certain level (can't recall which & what skill it's called), u'll be hasted as well so .... no haste getting there.
the mithril golems are among the hardest in all campaigns with that lich being quite an S-hole for throwing so many blinking spells (which i must try out if i ever play sorc or wiz). not that it's very hard to kill him, it's tedious.

You're right there Jang. The problem with Liches and especially Demi-Liches is they get about 30/+5 damage reduction and are undead, hence immune to crits.
Not immune to IGMS though.
I rarely use lvl 9 spells against the super bad-guys as they all get resisted. Maximized IGMS will kill anything except spell-mantle protected creatures oddly enough. Then one cast of Mords disjunction will fix that....
Suffice to say that with Valen and Deek as my henchies and 9th-level spellcasting nothing is much of a problem anymore.
Crusader: Thanks for the info. I will try the old Fighter/WM build when I finish the HoTU campaign for the first time. With a dwarf of course, because humans bore me a bit.
What I really miss about NWN that I totally loved in IWD2 are the subraces. Assimar Sorc anyone? Drow and Duregar f*cking rocked too....

@janggut: if you want to play a pally, make sure you multi-class to champion of torm. untouchable saving throws, not that you'll need it given the many high-powered,high-quality magic items in hotu. but still, you can never have enough of saving throws. aside from that, feats galore, which a pally badly needs.
about the aa, you just have to be constantly on the move. it gets to be rather hair-raising when you're up close with a melee opponent, but you should be able to handle it. i don't really like a raanged char., though, so my experience w/ her is rather limited. just tried that build out of pure curiosity. i'm still a melee fighter at heart.
iirc, monks do not get the haste ability for free. instead, they get a boost to movement speed every 4 levels, i think. they also get a +1 bonus to AC every 5 levels. haste is different; once equipped, you get a fat +4 to AC as well as an extra attack per round. and monks are terribly powerful already even without that; with haste, they become a walking slaughterhouse.
@womble: yes, a dwarven fighter/wm can be deadly too. you can go fighter 8/ wm 7 so you can get wm feats early. a barb just takes a longer time to get to wm; i just wanted to make use of the rage ability, as i'm bored with fighters already.
by the way, if you don't know it yet, once you get to a certain black altar, you can get black pearls and upgrade your weapon there for it to have a drain strength ability. just imagine if you have an axe of the culling which has a dispel magic ability plus a drain str ability, plus the upgrades you can get at the armory. my god, you'll have one kick-a** weapon with all the weapon master feats on top of it.
about iwd2, i once built an all drow party, with 2 being pallies. their saving throws were unbelievable.

I guess this thread is turning into a bit of a NWN discussion. Its cool though.
I did find that altar crusader. My Sorc only upgraded 'Enserric the Dagger' by accident though. I took my Pally level later and wished I'd stuck the lvl drain in a greatsword. Wish I'd made enserric a greatsword too. Still, live 'n' learn. I bought a fresh +5 greatsword and ugraded that at the smith. On the last chapter of HoTU now. The mimic is driving me insane. I had to quit at 2am last night beacause of work today....
Looking forward to slaughtering Grimnaw and pals. Instead of choosing epic spells I just went for improving my death spells to the point of ludicrousness. Epic spell focus etc... Nothing much survives my wail or my finger. Those that do are hacked apart by Aribeth and my celestial avenger. (Deek sings and provides comic relief. ) Yes I thought I'd try Aribeth as a Henchie. I miss Valen's crits but Aribeth seems to hold herself better. She also has about 500hp! She hits most of the time with the astral blade+8. +8 weapons!! Mercy!

Sense NWN 2 is coming out, or they're making it. Hopefully the price on NWN gold will go down and I'll give it a spin.

Maybe you just got a crappo version spick. Could just take it back. I had to upgrade may video card for mine but I was doing that for KoTOR anyway. Well worth it for both I reckon.
Got the latest drivers? What version of DirectX you running? It seems to support most of them though.

Sometimes I wonder whether it would make sense if we'd try to start a discussion on how we would develop a character-system or even a whole RPG system ???

i wonder if u have similar probs as Egin & Lucretia? i recalled Luc couldn't get hers to work as well & i believed that it won't work on her LCD monitor. so, is your PC utilising LCD or CRT?

Mine's an LCD too. That shouldn't be a problem.

Sometimes I wonder whether it would make sense if we'd try to start a discussion on how we would develop a character-system or even a whole RPG system ??? I tried that once before, but it just went nowhere. It was a sci-fi RPG. That might have been why. I'd be interested in the discussion if you'd like to start one. What sort of RPG would it be? Why is it different to D&D and GURPS?

handefood, i recall u did make some kind of game system for a sci-fi based RPG. i even downloaded the files to read the system u created. it was pretty good, as far as i can recall. sadly i lost it when i transferred files to my new system. we can look at your creation & have a go at it.

@ spick: can you recall when you installed nwn if it ran a compatibility test or something like that? it should. if it didn't, i think your copy is the problem.
also, what is yor vid card? i read somewhere in the bio forums that nwn seems to run fairly smoothly on nvidia cards, but not on other cards of comparable power. i only have a geforce 2 (thought on upgrading but held out for the meantime as i think prices of nvidia cards may fall further because of nvidia's recent releases) and 256 mb of ram and i hardly encounter any problems, except for some slowdown when enemy mages rain on spells like they're throwing confetti on a parade. well, at least my monk is still standing there barely injured despite all kinds of spells being hammered at him. ahh monks, supreme mage-killers as they are...
@handedfood: interesting discussion. i think it's better to discuss an entire rpg-system rather than char creation. for an rpg to be succesful, much more interesting, it has to have all its elements functioning well together. synergy, so to speak. the whole must be greater than the sum of its parts.
let's take a look at some promising rpg's: toee - faithful adaptation of 3.5 ed d&d, the best turn-based i've seen, but extremely buggy. lionheart-i admit i haven't played this game, but one look at the reviews and i don't think i want to. reviews said its char creation is wonderful, but everything else goes downhill from there. dungeon siege-pretty graphics, you can play the game from start to finish without seeing a single loading screen, ever. but way too linear, and char development is not totally under your control. not much in the way of skills, either. iwd2-here's another game i tried hard to love playing, but i couldn't. i didn't mind the hack n' slash action much as i liked the story, but it turned out to be more like a chore to be finished than a game to be enjoyed playing. the pathfinding is horrible, there were many fights in the ice temple that i found 2 or 3 party members missing. when i got to dragon's eye, i just gave up. keeping track of 6 characters in a very difficuly, combat-oriented game is just too much for my patience. the fight with the lost followers is very difficult, even on easy mode. the fight with the guardian dragon is even more difficult, bordering on frustrating. and there were many instances that after a loading screen, you'd end up with monsters or enemies right before your faces, w/o the time to prepare for combat. it's like you're being fed into the lions' den. i've read on the interplay forums that people were getting close to throwing their monitors out the window or banging their keyboard. sigh, i can only sympathize with them.
i'm sure others can point out the pitfalls of other rpg's which had the potential but quite didn't make it.

crusader, lionheart has another plus, which is dialogue system. sadly it doesn't go beyond that.

ahh monks, supreme mage-killers as they are... Yeah right. I thought Grimnaw and his party were one of the hardest fights of t he game? One, and I mean one cast of wail from my lvl 26 sorc and 4 of his party went down like sacks of sh*t! Only the Rogue survivied briefly as I stared in disbelief for a second at the screen. Then we chased her down. (yes, she ran away) Phat lewt I must say! w00t! Anyway, I've made my choice for second time through now. Following the 'uber sneak-attack' rogue build from the bioware website. I like my munchkins. Spick: Check your vid card. Mine, like Crusader's, is nvidia. I never really bothered running the setup program either. Just ran like a charm straight off. The rest of my settings seem similar to yours.
