Hi,
I've been a PC game player for 20 years without ever owning a console - or even ever playing on one for that matter.
Can anybody please give an opinion on whether any of the Xbox games are worth having.
I've read that the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance games are based on the PC BG games but are different. Can anybody elaborate on that?
I'm told that an Xbox, with attachment, makes a good DVD player. So I thought that if I was going to get a player I might as well get an Xbox to do the job, and have the chance to play a few different games as well.
But this could be faulty thinking! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> Anybody with Xbox experience?

Although I've played PC Games for 7 years, I recently bought an Xbox <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. I'd, of course, reccomend KotOR, which you can get for 30 AUS, since it's in the Platinum Collection. Also I'd reccomend the first Splinter Cell but it's a rather unusual game so unless you are into difficult stealth games or have a lot of patience, you might be frustrated by that game. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance are like Diablo in the BG universe. Basically it's a 3d hack and slash games with lots of weapons/armours and 2 player abilities. There are excellent secrets in that game: for example you can play as a certain dark elf with a pair of certain blades... A great game for two or a game for one; it is remnant of the old Gauntlet. I haven't tried the Xbox in DVD mode but I will: I am tired of detaching it to attach my DVD player each time I want to watch Futurama. I hope that cleared out a bit for you. Cheers! Gotta go wurk-wurk.

For the X-Box Knights of the Old Republic and
Morrowind - Game of the Year Edition.
Both excellent (though haven't played Knights of the Old Republic, but most other here have and love it).
Morrowind will keep you in rgp heaven for a long time!

Morrowind will keep you in rgp heaven for a long time! Since Morrowind is my second most-hated RPG of all time, I'd reccomend you to try it first, if you haven't yet, before buying.

Thanks very much for the replies,
Great to get replies from two well known forum members who obviously know a lot about games, and whose opinions I respect. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Splinter cell sounds interesting as I had graphics troubles with that on PC and never got it working properly. Doesn't happen often, but very occasionally conflicts don't seem resolveable. In fact I can only think of 2 occasions in 20 years.
A hack and slash version of BG might be fun too. I tend to snobbishly think of myself as not a hack and slash fan, until I remember all the fun I had with the ones I did buy.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
I'm intrigued by DATD's hatred of Morrowind. It seems to be one that people either loved or hated. I have it on PC and got totally absorbed by it for many weeks. I wrote the first rough guide post to be 'stickied' at the official forum. It got over a quarter of a million views before the forum was rejigged and it was replaced by somebody else's post that was much more up to date and in depth. I also built myself an 'add-on' room with the construction set. I finished it and bought the first add on. Then, an hour or two into the add on, my interest suddenly evaporated and I've never played it since. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/question.gif" alt="" /> It's funny how once something pops the bubble of immersion and the magic of a particular game vanishes, how hard it can be to coax it back again. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />
The main thing is though, that the thread wasn't immediately flooded with people telling me that Xbox isn't worth having, blah blah. I'll now try wading through a few review sites and see if I can get more of a feel for the general play style of Xbox games.
Thanks.

Well, there is nothing strange about me disliking Morrowind: I find that the game has no story. But this is not a Morrowind discussion thread so I'll speak about other things.
About Splinter Cell: Sadly the Xbox version doesn't have a save-anytime function which is often frustrating. For example, in one mission you have to use your heat-goggles to enter the code on the keypad: the enemies do not wear gloves and since the room temperature is cool, you can see the heat signals on the keypad for a limited time after it has been entered. The problem is that you find but three of four digits for the code... Now if you have to get past some guards to try the combination for six-seven times, it might grow on you. Thank god for Gamefaqs.

Just bought an Xbox myself the other day. Gone down to 150 euro. I'll have to keep an eye out for KotOR - no shop seems to have it.
Didn't get any RPG's with it, but Ninja Gaiden is a damn good hack & slash!

KotOR is now in Platinum Collection (20$).
I'd highly reccomend Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2 for Diablo and Nevewrinter Nights fans. This is a very solid (pure) hack&slash game with several original ideas. Took me more than a week to finish. Will restart now as another character or play as Drizzt (one of 2 unlockables). Drizzt has his own voiceovers, both of his scimitars and a mithril chainmail. All weapons look unique.

Agreed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I'm now on my 3rd time through Dark Alliance 2. Playing as Drizzt on the Extreme difficulty setting (so I can unlock the other 'secret character').
He's up to level 33 now, but after about level 30 there's nothing left to spend the level up points on, and only tiny advances in his stats on levelling, so I'm having to get a lot more cunning, block more, run about a bit more etc. particularly as I haven't been able to improve his armour stats much yet. Next act we should get access to the gems I need... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Good fun. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Ever got the amulets at +15, mate? I mean: is there REALLY that much money on Extreme?
Playing as a barbarian now. Will keep my necro endgame save for later. I accidently overwritten my Monk savegame in the first act and I don't really feel like replaying as her. Too bad: I wanted to see what happens on maximum Hand Weapon, Improuved Critical and Combat Reflexes feats...

I'd not given it much thought - as 176 seems a lot of gems and/or rune stones - but yes, aparently there is enough money. I’m currently under Firewind Manor – pretty much at the end of Act 1. I just checked how much gold I had and it was around 400,000! So, to answer your question, I tried buying 176 rune stones (boring button pressing…) which cost less than 160,000. It only cost about 6,000 to make a +15 amulet of protection. So I still had well over half my money left. However, I’m still doing well at my current armour rating, so I’ll keep the money and wait until I get the right gems turn up in the next act. By then I should be able to make something a bit more expensive, but a bit more powerful too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />

When you score a critical hit most of the time with your BOTH scimitars, who needs protection <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />?
What does Drizzt say when you leave the controller?

I only heard it once, but it was something about us neeeding to get moving because someone was hot on his heels. I think it was the other unlockable character?? My knowledge of the RPG world is a bit weak, so I hadn't heard of the other guy - is it an arch enemy of Drizzt? Artemis someone??
The first character I played threatened to strangle me with the controller cord if I didn't get a move on. I liked that one. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />
You're right about the scimitars. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> On normal with Drizzt I beefed his strength up a bit and it we chopped our way through the game at full throttle.
It's a bit trickier on Extreme though as some of the enemies hit very hard. I prefer not to rely on swigging potions all the time, and if you get caught between two enemies it's SPLAT pretty quickly! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohh.gif" alt="" />

Artemis Entreri (not sure if his last name is spelled right) Yes he is Drizzt's arch-ennemy. They are both almost as strong as each other. He's a Rogue/Assassin. Human too.

Thanks for the info Rythok. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I managed to unlock Artemis Entreri eventually, but it was tough playing as Drizzt on extreme. It was OK at the start but we soon met up with enemies that could kill him in one hit, so progress got very slow, and some patches were really hard to get through.
Drizzt can't wear any more than second level armour, and Artemis can't go above the basic level armour, so that handicaps them a fair bit. Drizzt's ranged attack wasn't much good at the higher difficulty level, so it was a constant battle to get a quick melee kill in before he got wiped out. Still, if you call a difficulty "Extreme" then I guess that's what it should be! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
I also bought Lord of The Rings, Return of the King. It looks good, and has a lot of nice material that appears to be mixed in from the movie footage, but I'm not finding it much fun to play. The camera angle keeps changing and it gets very confusing trying to keep track of exactly where my character is. Maybe I need a better TV, but I end up feeling almost sea-sick after a few minutes play, so haven't played much of it.

I quite enjoyed Return of the King - though on PC not Xbox, sometimes the camera was a bit messy, but it didn't ruin it for me. I never got motion sickness from any game so it didn't bother me too much. Some nice levels, and some very frustrating ones as well.
Can't wait for the new one Lord of the Rings - The Third Age

Third Age will be very different from other LOTR games, this one will play like a Square/Enix console RPG. Wich means you walk around, get some random encounters and fight in turn-based battles. IMO it looks great and you'll probably love it if you're into that type of game.
