They didn't need to give you reason. The price tag on the game should be motive enough! Hohoho. On another board, ToEE is getting "Glorified Coaster Award" votes.

What's all out there, DD, BD, gothic 1/2, morrowind, sacred, Anachronox, arx fatalis, blade and sword, lionheart, Blade of Darkness... any others? I haven't played gothic 1/2 or sacred yet, although they look interesting. I played morrowind for a few months but eventually got bored of it, it was almost too open-end, and I got overwhelemed by the ammount of open quests at any givin time; I'm also a mmorg player and felt that morrowind had a very mmorg like feel... without the benefit of being a mmorg. I also haven't played BD, simply because of starforce. mmm...Arcanum, Dungeon Master 2, Might and Magic series, Stonekeep, Thief: Deadly Shadows, Menzoberranzan, Planescape : Torment.

The only forthoming game I've found that really looks like a 'proper' RPG is Dragon Age from Bioware. If that game is half as good as the description, it may just eclipse Torment, impossible as that sounds...

Arcanum is a very good choice, it totally rocks, and it's HUGE!
The look&feel is much like divdiv. It's also incredibly buggy and unbalanced. I never had any prbs with Arcanum ever.

There's also Temple of Elemental Evil If you're into D&D. And if you're prepared to play something with basically no plot, lots of bugs, etc. jeez any game you don't slam on?

Actually Marek, there's nothing that she doesn't slam on.
I found ToEE to be very enjoyable - main story is sort of thin but there's lots of little quests to do and the combat saves the game for me. Great combat engine. Very buggy out of the box though, so patch right away.
Arcanum has tons of fans. I have it, but could never get into it. Might try it again in the future though.
Fallout series -cool Wizardy 8-super cool Might and Magic, 7 was great, not sure about the others...

Arcanum is a great choise if you whant a lot to do. The only weaknesses it has got is it's graphik (wich doesn't really matter, you'll get used to it) and it's combatsystem (wich is hack n' slash to it's extreme). Apart from that, it's a perfect RPG. The carracter system is probably the best I have ever stumbled uppon. As long asw you don't mix magic and tecnology you can do whatever you whant (well... allmost, you DO have a maxlevel at 50). When you 've finnished it the first time (with a serious charracter) you can replay it with another kind of charracter (like a dumb one (the start with a retarded half-ogre is just gold ), or an ugly one. Or simply another kind of charracter). Of chourse (did I spell that correctly ), there is other things thats great with the game (like it's size, or the quests, or the humour etc) but basicly, when you know how to get your char to lvl 30 in one day, those are not the things that keeps you going. And of chorse, afterwards you can enter the web and start reading all the stories connected to the game (like "you know that you've played too much Arcanum when" lists, wich allways is great if you've played the game. (On one list there was one point that was: you know that you've played too much Arcanum when you can create a charracter in under ten seconds. I tried and think I made 15 secs ))
Ubereil
PS Maybe it falls on the 2000+ or the fact that you've allready played it (I don't know that) but you could try out Fallout 1/2. Great games DS

A real interesting and upcoming single player RPG thats going to be coming out real soon is The Witcher.
It looks like it might relieve the RPG dry spell for awhile.

Kyra_Ny so very true. no good new rpg's out there as of now. it's so bad that i've gotten back to playing on b.net that i once loathed. well, at least there's patch 1.10 to tinker around with now. nothing like a fanatic zealot pally leading the party with lvl 20 fanaticism aura.

dragon age looks good. what's the witcher?
also, the team that brought you toee and arcanum should be releasing vampire:bloodines - the masquerade (or something like that) soon. they licensed the halflife2 engine and have been waiting for that to go gold (which it did today).
[edit] oh, also the fall - last days of gaia looks really good, but no word on an english release yet. rest of europe - coming soon!

@ crusader, you mean a lvl 36 fana aura, right? jvb, i was just counting a maxed out fana aura with no plus skills. meaning, only the pts i sunk into that skill, since plus skills can be very variable depending on your equipment, and my fanatic zealot is only lvl 50+. but hey, even at "only" lvl 20, fana is a killer. i once partied up with a necro, a barb & an assy. the necro was a summoner, with 9 skellies, a clay golem, and a might merc. with fana aura buffed up in 1.10 (i think the radius was increased, whereas it was only fixed at 7.3 yards before), we went from act 2 nm to end of act iv in one sitting. we moved so fast & tore everything in our path and got stalled only in the chaos sanctuary as those pesky & annoying oblivion knights were very busy casting IM. plus, that balrog boss (infector of souls) & his gang are so deadly in 1.10. we could have gone on to act v but i had to rest else my kidney would explode. lol.

Here's the link to "[color:"yellow"]The Witcher[/color]" site: http://www.thewitcher.com/intro.aspBasically, CDPROJEKT asked Bioware if they could use their Aurora Engine to create a game. Bioware said okay and CDPROJEKT modified the Engine to make "The Witcher". It looks real good! Kyra_Ny ************************************************** "My very first computer was a Commador64!"

Hm ...
Considering that I've heard that the game is modelled after one of the very first D&D "adventures", does this mean (imply) that the adventure didn't have any reasonable plot as well ?
Well, it was basically designed as a "Dungeon Crawl", I assume, and therefore was mainly made for combat, I think. Do your research, mmmkay. ToEE was a dungeon crawl module, yes, but it came with some background information and backstory that its PC incarnation utterly lacks, such as the prophecy concerning the temple, or the fact that some of the NPCs in Hamlet are covert agents. At the very least, in the original PnP module, you are given a sufficient reason to raid the temple; in the electronic version, you basically just go there and don't really know what you're doing, because the game has given you zero motive and practically no background information. Thats because TOEE is more a strategy game then an rpg with a big huge story.By the way most games come with Bugs thats why you download a patch.

My only complaint about ToEE was it being toned down for the children. That was an Evil Mod in PnP and I wish it could have reflected the same on PC. Oh well, then again, maybe I played with a really good DM. Kyra_Ny
