Level 35 in the wastelands is early, especially considering you gained five levels during the ritual. Not un-manageable though.
If you do all the quests and get most of all monster killing XP, you should be around level 40 when starting the ritual, giving you 45 at the start of the wastelands, and short of 50 at the end.
