I'm an oldtime RPG player, i've played most RPG's released, and i concur: Divine Divinity is better than Diablo 2 and most other RPG's released in recent time.

I hope 2 is more like then

Me too, but still, they are the best RPG's ever (well, Baldur's Gate 1 is also extremely good).

welll since

Morrowind > Divine Divinity
Im certain that
TES4 > Divine Divinity 2
and maybe even
Gothic 3 > Divinie divinity 2

Depends on gameplay really... TES4 is supposedly going ot mak ethe gameplay much for fun then in MOrrowind, and gothic 2 the combat was the best in any game ever... and in Beyond Divnity the combat sucked and if they use anything from BD in DD2 well... DD2 would = Dissapointment.

The combat sucked??? is extremely challenging combatwise, plus the variety in strategy, especially with different classes for your hero and Deathknight, is enormous. I love Morrowind too, but THAT was easy combat: click mouse rapidly -> done. I really don't see how you can say this aspect of the game is bad.

I made it a point that the combat in Morrowind wasnt great. the combat in Beyond divinity is terribly. Im not saying that its terrible because of the strategy aspet, I am saying this because there is 2 attacking animatins, When people ghet hit they dont even seem like it, and the characters move much to slow.

Morrowind Combat is, click lcikc do 3 different types of attack, hold in for stronger attack, I have needed to use strategy on quite a few occasions, but most enimies have only 3 hurting animations, which are terrible.

Gothic combat system. Hold the attack button and press a direction to attack that way, Forward, Left or right. Excellent animation, excellent detah animations. You must parry ir you will die in very few hits, Very realistic. At level 5 you could beat a level 15 if you are quick enough and dont get hit once or you will die, Very realistic and plate armor makes a huge differencem at any level.

So my rating per say for each games combat system it.

Divine Divinity : 5, Click click click, run, click click click. I also have had troubles with misclicks and un-responsive controls causeing me to die, often.
Beyond Divinity : 2, I wont say it was the worst ever but...
Morrowind :4, more immersive combat where you actually sontrol your person trhough first person view, but the animation is terrible and you only get three attacks, plus your guy uses the bow in an impossible to use stance.
Gothic Series :10, Lots of buttons lots of practice, awsome animation, cool blood cut effects. Realistuic technique, Not to mention at each rank up your guy holds the weapon type differently. No doubt best combat ever.

Well to be honest, I can't really build up a case here because I never played Gothic (1 or 2). But still, I can't say I agree. Oh well, as long as we enjoy ourselves, who cares about small differences of opinion?

Never really liked the D%D series (espessially not Icewind Dale 2. After the first town it was only big gangfights and lot's of 'em. And having six partymembers from the start really took away the personal feeling of your char. Because of this I really understand John Irwing when he (in Garp) arguments against having a lot of children). There was one exeption though... And that was Planescape:Torment. Great game. It had a personal feling over your main charracter (the Nameless One) witch none of the other (two) D&D games I've played. The main plot is to find his real identity wich keeps this personal feeling even when you have six party members. And it wasn't too much fighting. And the NPC's were just great (Mort is acually one of my favorite NPC's ever. It gets even better when you get Anne to your party... ).

Ubereil

PS Gothic seems kind of neat, I think I'll check it out DS

They are awesome. is still the best, but Baldur's Gate I and II + their expansions follow right behind. Epic story, great combat, hours and hours of gameplay; you should really try them. You can easily find them in budget by now. Go for it!

The console Baldur's Gate games are okay. My 7 year old son liked them a lot, I merely liked them. On the PC, I guess I found the learning curve a bit steep, and it always felt like at the beginning of the game I would never get powerful enough to do anything.
Somehow, turn based RPG's need to find a happy medium, where the pause doesn't detract from the game. Maybe something like queing up a few turns, or even a record when you start combat mode so after the battle you can watch the entire thing unfold.
But if you are already into the games, the BG series is for you.
