What type of characters are you playing?
Did you try running away? If you withdraw a bit to regroup, they may spread out a bit coming after you. The swirl attack (secondary skill) may come in handy when you get surrounded, as well.
Bone damage should work well on the shadow creatures, otherwise use something that does regular damage; make sure you are not using shadow weapons.
