Morbo's calculations of grades:
Grades > 10 bad Grades <= 10 good
The with honours (like I graduated last year) are only important in your final year so it gets on your diploma. So in the years in between a 10 is good enough for me.
Also it's not so like in America where you have to do well so you can "get in" a school like harvard or some other classy school. Here you are free to choose the school you go to.

well this is not completely true @Morbo, There are some study's where you have to make a "prime-exam" (ingangs examen), and for example only the 200 best result can follow that year.

Yeah but those are "freak studies" since you got to be mad to start a course like that

G=Godkänt=Aproved. VG= Väl Godkänt= Well Aproved MVG=Mycket Väl Godkänt= Very Well Aproved IG=Icke Godkänt=Not Aproved. -=The teacher couldn't judge your skills. Since I never miss a lesson, this won't happen to me.
How I see the grades:
G= Hardlly Decent. VG= Good/Decent. MVG= Great . IG= WHAT THE HELL WHERE YOU DOING, YOU MORON?!? -= Erm... You got the wrong scedule, right?
You need MVG's to get the good educations, but all the teachers says that MVG, as the top grade, is very difficult to get. This really makes me psyce...
My grades so far:
Mattematik A (maths A): MVG (too easy) Svenska A (Swedish A): MVG Historia A (History A (durp)): MVG Datorvetenskap A (computers A, Exel and other complicated stuff...) MVG Rättskunskap A (Knowledge of rights (laws and such things ) A): MVG Engelska A (English A): MVG (looks good so far doesn't it?) Samhällsvetenskap A (Society knowledge (what do you call this in english?) A): VG Naturkunskap A (Nature science A): VG Moderna språk: Tyska C (I think it's C) (Modern languages: German C): VG (ridiciouslly high...) Mattematik B (Maths B): VG (close to G ew:) Fysik A (Physics A): G Kemi A (Chemistry A): G (dammit, I should have had a VG here! I blew it !)

Thanks Ubereil. I would never have figured that one out on my own. A grading system like that is completely foreign to me. I like yours alot better than what we have here.
Like Lews, I was after all the As I could get For me there was alot of pressure to keep my gpa as close to 4.0 as I could. Why? Because in the end the higher your gpa the better your chance of getting into the college you wanted.

Being a teacher i still think that the french grading system is the best one and the easiest to use for both teacher and students.
With the swedish system i am wondering how a student could have the smallest idea about his own value.
All the systems are hurtful but the student has to face with the reality : life is hurtful. If we protect too much the young ones, they will never be adults (just like me !)

@ Barta -> You mentioned in an earlier post that the french grading system was 0 - 20. Could you explain just a little more about this?
I agree that sometimes we can protect kids to much. I was raised in a very protective environment and I still live in one today to a certain extent. This has made it hard for me in alot of ways in learning how to deal with what I will call the real world.

Well, I want the best grades possible, so I can get into a good college. I think the American system is a good system, but maybe thats because it makes me feel good about what I personally think of as horrible work.

Lews, if you had been the son of a crackaddicted mother and a drinking father (who's currentlly in jail), I don't think you would have had the same oppinion...
I don't like the entire Swedish school system, but I DO like the fact that everyone has the same opportunity (more or less, this CAN'T be entirelly true, unfortunantelly ), no matter your background, since school is free (ok, if you whant to study in another city, you'll have to borrow half a million from the state to afford living, but that's another story).

Here our grades are %. You pass with 60+%.
Though the government are going to change the way teachers have to evaluate students, but I dunno what it's all about and neither does my math teacher. She read us a part of the letter she got from the government and their vocabulary was so developped we didn't understand a thing of what they meant.
I sure am glad I'll be in college at that time (they won't be affected by this) since it really looks like ****
Also, I believe school is obligatory till the kid gets 16 years old, here.

So do we, its 60%, but then after the quarter is over, they show all your grades, but not the percentage the ties to the grade, say 95% for an A, and then add that to your gpa out of 4.0 which would mean you got all straight A's.

Kids here have to go to school until they're 15 years old. After that they're free to leave. Of chorse, you won't get a job if you quit school when you're fifteen, so you have to continue studying, now at a thing here called gymnasium (here is where your education starts to get a little profile). You read here for three years, from when you're 15 to when you're 18, and here is where I'm reading. After this, you're still free to leave school, and if you've read some programs (when you've finnished main school and are going to the gumnasium you choose between different programs, which are great bunches of subjects, different for every program, if you don't count the main subjects (math A, Swedish A and English A are the most important ones, but you've got some others as well) who is equal for every single program) you can even get a decent job by now. But not if you choosed my program (nature science), who contains of lots and lots of math, chemistry, physics and such, and is designed purelly to get a good education to bring with you inot university. So, I've GOT to go to university when I'm finnished with with the gymnasium.

Ube, works basically the same way here too. I really am not eager to see what our government has in store for us though. I think our education system is very good, why change it?

Canada, province of Quebec. And it's the province's government who changes the education system. Might sound silly but ontario works differently than us.

Basically I agree with Lews about our grading system. It isn't all that bad.
I just didn't like the letter grades. There was alot of pressure on me to get those As, but that is because I needed to keep my gpa as high as I could. Why? Because it meant whether I could get into a good college or not.
I would have been alot happier just getting something in a number grading system or percentage or just simply my gpa. Letter grades were bad for my self esteem and I'm not sure why they made me feel worse.

I agree.
But IMHO it was always wrong to put so much stress on young people. Ok, you should do well in school. But it's also the time when you should be able to enjoy your life. (A kid should be able to be a kid. A teen to be a teen.) And not be forced into competition. You'll get enough of that later on.
It makes some youngsters feel (to) good about themselves while it (can) couse (serious) mental troubles for others.
