Too serious? Try Tomas Coveant. That's too serious! Never got into it...

A serious recomendation is Tad Williams. Reading Memory, Sorrow and Thorn (or whatever you call it in English), a book about the kitchen boy Simon who is... Well, I don't whant to spoil it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />. Definentlly worth reading though. Otherland is supposed to be good too, might read it after this (and the book I have to read in English. I might find Otherland in English...).
