Maybe that's the answer.

An odd side note is that I've legally owned a number of different flavours of Microsoft's OSs right back to when they began - some I even had more than 1 licence for.

So I still have a neat little row of disks, starting with an early DOS on a five and a quarter inch floppy, going through Win 3.1 on the smaller floppies, on to Win 95, and a Win 98 or two. Finally there's my fully paid up copy of XP. All legal and paid for.

Yet the OS on both my current machines were actually installed from pirated disks - one Win 98SE and the other a cracked XP. I have bought (and still posess) fully legal disks of both Win98 and WinXP so I don't believe that I'm breaking the spirit of the law. But thanks to some of Microsoft's more cretinous policies I had problems getting my legal copies to do what I needed!

Microsoft could do with some real competition. Go Linux!
