Rude shop assistants. People who jump the queue at the local bakery, when it’s MY turn. The morons who purchase the so called 'programs' they infest our TV stations with. Inconsiderate drivers, litterers, graffitists, selected politicians and 'entertainers', etc, etc.

I might be against death sentence but you've got a point here... At least in the third case, the others is more of a question (especially the graffitists, IF they're skilled, but on the other hand they need time to practice, and on and on and on other discussion we'll take it some other time).

Death sentence: a brilliant and useful idea, and should I be honoured with the position of Lord High Executioner,

As some day it may happen that a victim must be found,
I've got a little list--I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground,
And who never would be missed--who never would be missed!
There's the pestilential nuisances who criticize our game--
Who never stop to think because they really love to flame.
And those who says the game's at fault for all their system woes,
When conflicts happen all the time, as everybody knows.
Those people who attack the staff, they've really got me p*ssed,
I'm sure they'd not be missed, I've got them on my list.

There's the folks who say the Larians don't give enough support,
And, well, you get the gist... I've got them on my list!
And those who to our helpful words, just give a rude retort --
They'd none of them be missed-- They'd surely not be missed!
The ones who trash the DK's voice, and say they cannot play;
The quibblers and Sacred-fans, who jump into the fray.
There's the idiot who praises in enthusiastic voice,
All RPGs but this one--like they didn't have a choice;
And those irritating spammers, and nay-sayers who persist,
They're right there on the list--I'm sure they'd not be missed.

(with apologies to W. S. Gilbert, and all Gilbert and Sullivan fans)

Matthew Chapter 27: 22-23
22 Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!"
23 But he said, "Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Let him be crucified!"

SOKOTO, Nigeria (CNN) -- A Nigerian mother sentenced to death by stoning has had her sentence quashed.

A sharia appeals court overturned a lower court ruling on technical grounds, the woman's lawyer told CNN.

The lower court in the northwestern state of Sokoto had sentenced Safiya Husaini, 35, to be stoned to death on a charge of adultery.

Sokoto is one of 12 states in the West African country that operate under sharia, or Islamic, law. There are 36 states in Nigeria.

Reports say the woman won the appeal because the alleged adultery was committed before the sharia law was instituted in Sokoto.

Your question was "And?"
So I added more. If the additional posts didn't answer your question, it is because your question lacked a verb. As I pointed out in my first post about the death sentence, the lack of a verb is the problem here.

and?? what does all that information mean to the subject?

That's like saying in a save the blue wale debate: "The blue whale eats plankton, greenpeace has rusty boats, japanese like sushi".

You do have a verb, but fail to capitalize The first word of your sentence; this is clearly a death sentence or to be more precise, the death of a sentence.

This is another dead sentence. However, I will do you the kindness of responding to your remark without any further mention of the demise of grammar to be found therein.

Salman Rushdie was issued a death sentence for writing a book. Does that not strike a chord within you about the just application of the death penalty?

Jesus Christ was sentenced to death and crucified because of public opinion. Do you not mourn? What do you think of the death penalty in this case?

A Nigerian mother was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery. Her sentence was overturned because of public opinion. What does this case make you think about the death penalty?

Or?

ok it seems i'm a bit late to say that:
but please don't shoot at each other...

this debate is not a debate about english grammar (or i will be the first one to die!)... maybe another topic but... i'm not sure it is really a good idea to debate about that...

cleglaw i'm sorry to say i wish you hadn't picked all your examples in death sentence that were pronounced for religious reasons... is there not enough civil death sentences in this world? (in China, in the USA, and in some other lands)...

Wrong!

But that doesn't make all of mathematics wrong.

A list of examples of absurd, inhumane or outrageous misjudgements doesn't negate the business of making laws or even somehow automatically refute a particular law. It just illustrates the idiocy of those who sit in judgement in some places. And as M_G, points out, good old religion seems to feature high on the list of fallible ways to make judgements...

We do need laws, but there will always be problems with enforcing them. Safer to take the decisions out of the hands of the Ayotollahs and leave it to Rincewind and myself.

Kris, you missed the prime candidates for public flogging, execution and having their heads stuck on large spikes.

People who type 'teh' in posts. I hate you. I despise you all. You have the intelligence of a potatoe.

I can see that I'll need to take more care! I'm a terrible typist and frequently type 'teh'. Usually I pick it up when I do a quick proof-read though.

On the other hand, I've never ever wrongly spelled 'potato' as 'potatoe' - so maybe there's hope for me yet.

Good graffiti on the backs of warehouses etc can liven up a dull railway journey. It's the tasteless, talentless morons who deface otherwise attractive public places that I would put the squeeze on.

However, in fairness to their frustrated little souls I would be prepared to hand out suspended sentences.... (in other words I'd hang them).

See what a bleeding heart old softy I am?

Seriously though, the business of officially sending people off to kill each other in wars makes me more uneasy than topping the occasional criminal. I would be extremely restrictive and selective about the circumstances in which it could be applied, but I think that I would still have it on the statute books.

There are some people in jail here who simply tore up their membership card of the human race with their actions. Yet we prefer to simply hide them away for the rest of their lives rather than say that they are surplus to civilisation. Let's not kid ourselves that our prisons are capable of reforming all their inmates or redressing the hideous wrongs done to the victims in any meaningful way.

The vast majority of prisoners, including murderers, are worth some compassion and understanding. But some aren't. Many people would not wish to be the ones that have to make the choice as to which is which - and fair enough too. So just leave it to me....

Example:

I certainly wouldn't execute Salman Rushdie or Nigerian adulteresses but there are some who I would be willing to dispatch.

We had a case locally of two people, a man and a woman, who sytematically kidnapped young girls and tortured and sexually abused them. When the thrill wore off they'd kill them, dump the body, and kidnap a fresh one.

There was no doubt of their guilt. Them I would terminate with no remorse.

We have a society that sends young men and women off to kill each other as part of the international dispute settling mechanism, yet will support and look after the people above for something like 40 years. We are also legally comfortable with abortion - which some see as the murder of innocent life.

Clearly all these things require careful thought, and the existence of one doesn't excuse or justify the other, but we do seem to have some odd priorities. There are no easy answers in any of those instances. In general I'm all for the preservation of life wherever possible. But there are cases where I'd make an exception.

Actually, as many of us know, 6x9=42.
Actually, I agree with you for the most part.
Your sentence structure seems to meet the grammatical tests. I appear to be the only one, however, who believes this thread is about death sentences.

Can just say though that you took up grafitti again . I SAID it's another discussion! That's why I won't reply!
Abortion is yot another discussion, but I'll take that in my reply ie later DS

Depends. If I was a devout muselim I'd probably fatwah his a$$. Similarly if I wrote a book damning the bible and all its lies I'm sure the whole of the midwest would want me dead. As for the cheating wife. Doesn't deserve death sure but those backwards countries have no concept of the sexual revolution. She knew the laws she lived under and should've been more careful. I mean, would you cheat on your wife if you were going to be stoned to death??
Basically, don't piss off entire groups of people.

I wouldn't just kill them. I'd slowly torture them to death. Maybe the death of a 'thousand cuts', with occasional salt rubs. Or smear their genitals with meat sauce and unleash the jack russel.
There was a case in the UK like this. A guy and his wife had been kidnapping young girls for years, torturing, killing them and burying them under the patio. Anyway, their case stretched on for years. I'd have shot them as soon as their guilt was obvious. Unbelieveable.
I guess this is one situation where I'm not remotely liberal. The lives of scumbags are valued far too highly in society.
Ask yourselves this, which is better? Have the guy with the better/more expensive lawyer get off or line all the lawyers up against a wall and blow 'em away. Actually getting on with justice. So a few innocents slip through the noose. Meh, thousands of guily go free every day. What would you prefer?

Bollocks, they signed up, they know what they're doing, they know the risks. If there was still a conscription then I would feel some sympathy. Not much, but some. For me, prison would be a far better alternative than military service. If I was to be shot or serve for 2 years that would make me think about it. Not much though, I'd rather have a clean execution than a messy one.

Indeed. I have no real standpoint on this. I wish it didn't have to be done but sometimes I think its neccessary. Out of sight, out of mind... I go pro-abortion just to annoy christians most of the time.

time's up!

well... that's not easy for me... not easy at all!

first 'potential' winner here was ubereil because if he was not debating he had a very good argument for not debating... unfortunately in his following posts ubereil said 'no' to death sentence then 'yes' then 'no' again...

draghermosran has utterly failed to convince me than statement about afterlife was necessary as a prerequisite for the debate as it is for me a very earthly debate.

then comes cleglaw... a very Occam's razor -like argument (i mean very short, very efficient, very powerful) in his first post... i think it was enough though... all what he said in the following was useless after that i think... and it was even weakening his first argument...

MeaCulpa was near to challenge cleglaw as i never said that it was death sentence for humans! story of a car could have been relevant! nethertheless MeaCulpa never prove not having been just Off_Topic...

janggut had some good arguments but very traditionnal ones! (like ubereil)...

kris... err... ok, where are your arguments? I see just a list of people that should be executioneed!

rincewind... hmm good!!! very good! maybe all this is just vile flattery for the attitude i had with a certain person though?!!!

womble had a very interesting late and incomplete (as it was just a reply to kris) attempt

so in the end i was having to chose between cleglaw, janggut and rincewind i think...

ok THE WINNER is

Rincewind

1) i'm not unsusceptible to vile flattery...
2) it was good stuff!
3) solidarity with the beard!
