They say that you get more conservative as you get older, and it seems to be true.
20 years ago I would have been fairly strongly against the death penalty, but now I’d cheerful throw the switch myself to fry some of the scum we end up looking after for the rest of their miserable lives in our jails.
Having seen a lot of good people die well before their time, for no good reason, I no longer put such a high value on the lives of some of the low-life we end up providing extended free board, lodging and medical care for.
But I would definitely require some safeguards to be put in place. Such as appointing me the only person with the power to hand down a death sentence.
The sort of people I’d apply it to now would include:
Rude shop assistants. People who jump the queue at the local bakery, when it’s MY turn. The morons who purchase the so called 'programs' they infest our TV stations with. Inconsiderate drivers, litterers, graffitists, selected politicians and 'entertainers', etc, etc.
I probably wouldn't always execute Game Company executives who release bug ridden games well before they're finished, but I would certainly bring back a few traditional medieval punishments to sharpen their concentration up a bit....
Tolerance and humanity would of course be extended towards certain antisocial behaviours - but only the ones practised by myself and an inner circle of toadies, flatterers, and bagmen.
