Kris:
It has become something of a modern pollutant.

Hm, more pollutant than the ads themselves (neon, pinboards etc) are those wearing/carrying/using these advertised products. Why? Well, you might escape TV, radio, cinemas, town centers etc., but not the people having fallen for the latest ad. At least not those wearing the latest fashion (be it unsuitable for them or not) - using the same colours - asking in the pub for the latest alco-pop - dying their hair in the lastest in-colour - smelling after the hip-hop perfume, deo - using/humming/speaking the latest ad-phrases

So, I'd like to ask you, Kris and your anti-ad-universum => how will you deal with this? An anti-ad-detection machine, closing the door to your little kingdom? Or... hmm... an anti-ad-destruction machine? Maybe similar to the car-wash devices at petrol stations? Or maybe a reverse brain-wash-device?

Yeah, and how will your ad be in this case?

After the German Wiedervereinigung, I went to the east of Germany in 1990 or 1991 or so. That what had formerly been the DDR. It was quite ... like a virgin : No advertisements hanging on the walls of buildings like I used to know it here in the west of in Germany. It was heaven.

Now, there are advertisements everywhere. The East Germany has lost its Virginity.

Great post Alrik. Beautifully and effectively put with a small number of words.

The great educational value of ads adds to helping ppl buy the right product

i'm not too good in english but i thought the word that was used for persons having dedicated their life to educating was teacher... i've never been really conscious that advertiser was a synonymous of teacher in english (well i've some progress to do there...)... i have to test my all too new knowledge immediatly...

so Barta, you're an advertiser?

aaaargh! why are my cheeks suddenly so painful!!!!

I did not dedicate my life to educating !
Educating is my job. I am a good teacher but it is not the most important thing in my life.
There is no advertising in french schools and i hope that it will never change.

You too eh? That drives me nuts! It's getting quite difficult to find reasonable clothes here these days without turning yourself into a free walking advertisement.

As for the towns... hmm ... I'd love to dream up a giant eraser or white-out pen and sneak down at night and remove it all. But alas, it's just a dream. Perhaps you could put me on the mailing list for your "reverse brain-wash-device"?

But, yes, closing the door to my private kingdom is my answer. We have a couple of hectares of bushland with many trees (yet we still have lovely views down a thickly wooded valley). There are other houses around but the trees and the hilly slopes hide the ones near us. At night it's easy to imagine that the orc armies are camped in the valley below...

And we share the block with hundreds of local birds and animals. We can't change the world, but we can keep our little bit of it the way we like it - for the time being anyway.

i'm sure he was... or more exactly i hope he was!

as i hope he was ironic when he wrote about grey and colourless things...

but arguing is also counter the seemingly other side arguments if i'm not too wrong!

for 'dedicating one's life' it was to understand as professional life (my omission, sorry), more agreeable like that, Barta ?

What about my idea? That would take the commersials of the street (and TV-channels...). But companys would still have a chance to advertice their products. And maybee we could add a coupple of editors with no interest in anyone getting any profits to write the commersials (that way it would become more of a review than a commersial. And you would not only get the positive side of the product, you would get the negative side of it too.). What6 do you think?

That would be ideal...if the ads were proper reviews and not just bullspiel about how shiny your hair will be if you wash it in the latest blue gunk!

Advertising rules the world now...music festivals that were about the acts are now second line to the beer that promotes it, schools in america get funding because they advertise coke, and people who proudly wear their nike gear and think it's 'cool' to wear labels are the most gullable of them all. They should be paying YOU to wear their crap and advertising it!!

That's the whole point of it ! The ads would be written by pepole who don't have any interest in the ads owner earning money. And that's why the wouldn't say stuff like: wear this shampoo and get shiney hair! Or maybe it would but they would add:... for an hour! Then it will go back to normal (if you don't count the itch[Linked Image])

<sigh> this is something I really envy you about - if ads were increased here to the term "trend" => we in the library have to contribute to this in a way => stuff like "Sex and the City, Ally MacBeal, Buffy, Angel" or books about "Scoubidou" or the newest diet book trend, Anti-aging literature => promising only one thing: a slim, youthful and fit briefcase etc.

ARE YOU CRAZY?

You want to put zillions of marketing people, creative art directors, artistst, advertising poets out of their well paid job?

Save all the money keeping radio and TV stations alive, that nobody would listen to or watch for their programme and shows?

Sports events would be nothing but - sport?

You want to kill all national economies at large?

And what would you want to do with the money saved? Use it to feed the starving? Invest it in the design of products with a functional use?

Let the individuals decide for themselves what they need, or worse, what they don't need? You still believe in Homo SAPIENS?

It's a myth!

Well, nothing's perfect, and I wasn't supposed to work with advertesements anywhay (maybe we could have the advertisers to work at the place, only that they're not suppose to advertice, only to enlight.).
And for sports... Well, there's way to much money in them anywhay.

advertisment has corrupted sports, it's not longer about having fun, playing a game and compete. It's about who earns the most money and if you do allready earn to much, why not do some tv commercials.

Advertisment is needed in sports, but is has gone much to far.

sure, but myths are nice - like the the myths about democracy, religion, Hogfather, the Tooth Fairy, virtues, beliefs, nice furry puppies, Easter Bunny. Hmmmmm, on 2nd thought => WE NEED ADS!
