Very true. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> It has become something of a modern pollutant.

Companies do need to advertise their products and services. In the past I have used the services of advertising and have even written some of it. But it seems to have run riot in some areas.

I have no objection to advertising in the print media, on TV, or on internet sites. I don’t seem to have any trouble skipping or ignoring panels or pages that I don’t have an interest in reading further. I don’t watch much TV, but when I do watch I have a channel changer, a mute switch, and an off button and they all work just fine when required.

However, public advertising is another matter. By some extraordinary oversight I forgot to mention public advertisers in the death penalty discussion. Advertising seems to have contributed more to urban ugliness than any other single factor. No matter how hard I try I cannot avoid the hideous impact caused by advertising as I drive into our nearby town. Let’s face it, it was never exactly Florence or Venice, but its ugliness now is positively staggering to the senses. The visual assault caused by thousands of signs, posters, banners, logos and all the full nastiness of modern commercialism is so strong that it’s actually a hazard to vision and concentration as you drive along the road into town.

Thank goodness I have my own little ‘private kingdom’ tucked away here in the countryside, free from billboards, neon signs and advertising. Out here, wild bandicoots scuttle through the untouched bushland; cockatoos, kookaburras and magpies swoop through the trees; commercial radio remains unplayed, and advertising is miles away….
