new topic is: are newspapers still informing people or are they just good to buy for making fires in winter (or playing with the dog if you like it better)???...
They're for news (something new, something unknown). But... what are news? Or to be exact, which news are relevant? What is the intention of news? According to rainbow press => scandals, emotions, petty stuff, sex and stirring the gut instinct. This informs and sells, hm? According to serious press (do they exist?) => politics and local stuff, sprinkled with a bit of culture. Informs, yes... and then? I have given up reading newspapers, I leave this to my colleagues and they inform me - I use the internet sites, where I find... errhm... news. Question cycle as above starts again, but my wastepaper basket for old paper doesn't fill up that fast, sparing me the way to deposit it. Local township news => internet, is faster. Kiya

I don't read or buy newspapers (or tabloids) anymore. I get my news either from the internet or the tv.
A good few years ago when I was buying them though I would actually only buy the 'crappy' tabloids because like Kris said, they were 'infotainment', they were more entertaining than the stuffy-serious-long-winded-spiel of the more 'upmarket' papers. Basically any broadsheet paper, which are a nightmare to read in the first place as they are so cumbersome.
However, the choice is there for whoever wants them, serious paper or no, not everyone gets to browse the internet all day. I think the paper is the traditional work lunch pass-time for many jobs, and most are quite informitive.

Newspapers also make great replacement paper towels for cleaning glass. Try it sometime. A little Windex or your favorite glass cleaner, a newspaper, and Walla, your glass will be cleaner and shinier than you've ever known before! I always get my news from the Tele, it can be so depressing seeing nothing, but doom and gloom 24/7 all of the time. Kyra_Ny

(One of) My teacher('s) once told me (and my class) a story about a newspaper. The main new of the day was a dog, who had been saved from drowning in the Thames (in London, if I'm not quite wrong). It was a little qute dog, and why his owners threw him into the Thames is beyond my knowledge. This story got the whole (what do you call it?) middle sides (you know ,where the main News is) and a coupple of more background on the subject. And in the corner there was a small note with the headline: 200 000 dead in Bangladesh...
And that's all I've got to say about this. [color:"#666666"] for now, at least... [/color]

Übereil Übereil The band “Depeche Mode” even wrote a song called “New Dress” which also concurs with your above statement. The news can be so fickled at times. Kyra_Ny

Paper articles are usually broken down into different types, main news (what's considered the most important of the day) and human interest stories (the little things that fill the empty slots throughout the paper, and then perhaps some humourous stuff here and there. Mad to think that a story of a dog would take perference over the Bangladesh thing, sounds like the tsumai in 1991 that killed near that amount. But that would be the fault of one paper. Wouldn't be right to deride 'all papers' because some of them are rubbish...

are newspapers still informing people or are they just good to buy for making fires in winter (or playing with the dog if you like it better)???... My answer to the question would be: YES (OK - you can't answer an "or" question with yes or no) Therefor, yes, newspapers CAN inform people - and the choice is the people's as to what kind of news are appealing, interesting or important. And their choice of newspapers reflects that need - in that respect, the newspapers reflect "the market". The highly, loudly and often claimed "liberty of the press" has been abused ever since newspapers have been invented. On the other hand, indisputably a free press has uncovered real scandals, where the "need to know" went beyond the pure sensationalism. And in that respect, I would hate to loose it. Such serious journalism is not dying out, I think (hope), but unfortunately, it does not sell in big quantities - but the fault is the readers', society's, if you want. The newspaper market reflects the desire of its readers - and its the readers that would miss it, if anyone would proclaim to ban the yellow press in order to hinder manipulation of the minds. Could/should this be controlled? I think, that's another topic.

"News papers" Originated to keep the ppl (Sorry Kris but yes I am lazy ) informed about what happened in there town. To keep the price down local merchants thought it a good idea to pay for "advertising" there wares in the said newspaper. where originally the articles depicted "New" events happening in there towns, now they are more for the reason of selling more papers keeping ppl employed, and thus there is more advertising, more "creative" Journalism, by hypering the head lines into something that appears to be dramatic (look at other thread on this forum for examples) and thus we learn to read "between the lines", although with the large amount of advertising these days one could say we have learned to read "between the pages" .
So what started out as an informative 1 page sheet of paper, has now grown into the monster we now of at least 50 pages of which approx. 45 are advertising and 5 are "Informative" articles, which over a period of time become easily identified thru personal experience and deftness of the hand.
To say that a newspaper is necasary is like saying that we need to live in a world of peace and quiet, it is never gonna happen.
I.O.W. is the paper that has printed the news a worthy acquirement, not if you are after an informative article, if however you want to find a particular product that you wish to buy and research then yes you should buy a newspaper as it has at leat 90% worth of items displayed for your perusal.
So the word "Newspaper" in it self is a misnomer and should be more in the range of Catalogue, brochure or some such.
In which case we conclude that we do not really "have" a newspaper anymore, which then means that this particaular debate is null and void.
And I just sat here waisting 10 minuters of my life writing for exactly no reason whatsoever, except to appear to the general members of this worthy forum as a "smartass" and which unfortunately is the truth

My favourite front page headline story in our local town newspaper was titled "Henrietta, heroine of the hen coop" and featured the exploits of a chicken which had chased off a hawk. There was even a photo of the chicken.
That's why like living in this neighbourhood. Firstly there is no local war, flood, famine or genocide to compete for the front page, and secondly they have enough humour to give the chicken front page news status.

Have not too much in common (monopoly is a good movie btw. It's a Swedish movie, so it's not likely anyone here has seen ith, but it's really funny. And clever. But most of all funny). If I had it in English I could post General Rotors answer to Microsoft's statement that if GR had developed as fast as Microsoft it would be able to go a million miles on a gallon of gas (or something like that). It's pretty fun.

how to make a monopoly in computer realm and especially in OS realm? 1) taking good ideas everywhere where they are. 2) with these ideas managing to release a produce that doesn't work. 3) selling it at a very strange expensive price. 4) dissmulating the source code for avoiding anyone to really understand what is that doesn't work.
well this is exactly what Bill Gates has done, no? Steve Jobs tried too, but he failed... will someone install linux in the 5 minutes after reading this?

Dn't think so, MG... And it's because you might be ringht about the first, but only partly right about the others, so no one will really believ you... (I can tell you I didn't and I have worked on Microsoft computers for all of my life (IF my life started when I was seven, that is...))
