"News papers" Originated to keep the ppl (Sorry Kris but yes I am lazy ) informed about what happened in there town.
To keep the price down local merchants thought it a good idea to pay for "advertising" there wares in the said newspaper.
where originally the articles depicted "New" events happening in there towns, now they are more for the reason of selling more papers keeping ppl employed, and thus there is more advertising, more "creative" Journalism, by hypering the head lines into something that appears to be dramatic (look at other thread on this forum for examples) and thus we learn to read "between the lines", although with the large amount of advertising these days one could say we have learned to read "between the pages" .

So what started out as an informative 1 page sheet of paper, has now grown into the monster we now of at least 50 pages of which approx. 45 are advertising and 5 are "Informative" articles, which over a period of time become easily identified thru personal experience and deftness of the hand.

To say that a newspaper is necasary is like saying that we need to live in a world of peace and quiet, it is never gonna happen.

I.O.W. is the paper that has printed the news a worthy acquirement, not if you are after an informative article, if however you want to find a particular product that you wish to buy and research then yes you should buy a newspaper as it has at leat 90% worth of items displayed for your perusal.

So the word "Newspaper" in it self is a misnomer and should be more in the range of Catalogue, brochure or some such.

In which case we conclude that we do not really "have" a newspaper anymore, which then means that this particaular debate is null and void.

And I just sat here waisting 10 minuters of my life writing for exactly no reason whatsoever, except to appear to the general members of this worthy forum as a "smartass" and which unfortunately is the truth
