Nice post janggut. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have this uneasy feeling though, that Rincewind is going to appear soon and reveal that he's the Director of one of Canada's leading Art Galleries, and then turn us all into frogs... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />

Perhaps I should quickly say something positive about our State Art Gallery...

Um.... it has excellent parking facilities. Very handy for parking and walking across the railway bridge straight into the heart of the city.... aah.. it's cool in summer, and dry and quiet in winter....uuummm... it has a coffee shop that seems very popular.... aaah, it's definitely no uglier than many other buildings around it...

No, Rincewind... put down that wand... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

Which people? 90% of the public never go near them!

90% of the public of the Art Gallery never goes near the Art Galleries... are you trying to tell us this very strange thing, kris <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

never mind: i never got the impression that public art galleries and museum were comparable to the Australian desert (are you sure you weren't confusing the two of them, kris???? beautiful both often but...)... the only thing i will reproach them is it is the more often crowded as underground after work...

anyway i still believe in the educational high value of art... i didn't say mass educational (one thing that is making me different from Stalin maybe)... and it is quite normal that ignorant pay for others being educated... fair punishment for their ignorance...

I love our Art Galleries and Museums here in America.

In fact this link is to one I've visited often:
http://www.nortonsimon.org/home_flash.asp

I always seem to find myself drawn to the Shiva statuettes.

... or worse, director of a parklands project that's working on an application for increased funding <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> ... One never knows...

Hmmm, can't figure how that frog is still so active <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" /> ... mostly they just lie around gasping for breath... wonder what went wrong with the spell... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif" alt="" />

Well, it's getting to the end of a long day here, so I'll announce the winner while you folks on the other side of the planet are still up and about, and possibly ready to argue...

I've read, enjoyed, and appreciated all your posts. Which, of course, makes it difficult to narrow the field. So to make a long story short, after laughing and cheering my way through Kris and Hakea's posts (great story about the Archibald Prize, btw), and enjoying MeaCulpa's thoughtful approach and Master G's delightfully argumentative one, the sentimental favourite was janggut in support of nature over institutionalized art. The frog << wizards are very fond of frogs <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" /> >> nearly grabbed it away, but in the end, the simple fable won out.

Congratulations, and over to you, Koz!

jeez that’s a bit of shock, I never won anything before. thank you rincewind. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

ok, you’ve all ranted away about some big issues so here’s a lighter one –

what was the coolest computer game of all time – and why

don't forget to undermine everyone else's selections as well as pushing your own. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

Ah we’re off again. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

My first gaming love was Zork, 20 years ago – a text only adventure on a big floppy. Just words, but you never forget the magic of your first love. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/kissyou.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/kissyou.gif" alt="" />

Then came Elite, a space trading game with a few straight lines, boxes and triangles etc for graphics on an Amstrad. Trading and upgrading your ship was great fun and not bettered since by flashier efforts since.

But to get serious – maybe the original Baldur’s Gate or Half Life (often imitated never really topped)??

For sheer charm (an attribute sadly missing in most games) and number of times I replayed it – I guess I’d have to go for the original Baldur’s Gate.

But, as we all know, the REAL greatest game of all time isn’t a game that we’ve played at all – it’s the one you’re WAITING for! So I guess it’s The Bard’s Tale – or who knows, even Divine Divinity 2. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/question.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/question.gif" alt="" />

Shameless sucking up!!! Deduct 20 points <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

Naming Divine Divinity is certainly a credible strategy - or it would be if you supplied even a shred of evidence or supportive opinion - but to nominate Beyond Divinity..... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" />

I'm "new" to gaming, so my first memory -- hmmm, a text adventure game called...ummm... "Adventure"? -- my first vaguely coherent memory only goes back to Betrayal at Krondor... when it was already a free download! The ending was such a shock it nearly put me off gaming completely.

The coolest of all time is almost certainly the one anticipated most, that disappoints least... at the moment, there are only two games on my Must Have list, and I'm already having doubts about the Bard's Tale (which is getting iffy reviews on console). I'll stay tuned for the PC version reviews in the spring, but that leaves DD2 ranking. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" /> And looking back, Divine Divinity is the only game I've actually played through more than once...

Wait! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif" alt="" /> The Coolest Computer Game of All Time is: the Larian forums - great replayability, infinite variety, suspense, humour, good company, brilliant characters, and even interesting hack 'n' slash at times! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

well, things are picking up. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> to start with janggut only managed a stifled sob, Master_Guroth showed what could have been a hard to beat strategy of nominating DD but then blew it by including BD.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> and poor old Kris could only think of games that were made literally in the the previous century.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" />

but Rincewind cleverly played the DD and DD2 cards and topped it off with a very inventive entry. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Come on people - you can't let the sly old wizard win again. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

My two most favorite PC Games of all time are “SHIVERS” and “SHIVERSII”

I have played them both over, and over, and over again.

Last count:
I’ve played SHIVERS – 23 times.
And
I’ve played SHIVERSII – 37 times.

In fact my last game of SHIVERS was only 6 months ago.

But I have played many, many PC games
and they all have a place forever in my "Heart" or in my 'Trash Can'. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Shall I make a list to display tomorrow?
Maybe I shouldn’t, I’d only bore you all.

I really can't decide on this. Sometimes the coolest game of all time is the one I'm hooked on at the moment. So that's NWN for me.

I've never liked BG. BG2 was tolerable but never finished it.

DD does rank up there as one of the best. BD? Sorry Larian, you screwed the pooch on that one! Tried and tried to get into it but just no interest whatsoever.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

For the absolute fun I had out of it with my friends I have to say I loved starcraft. Its a work of simple genius. Dated sure but really, really balanced with infinite tactics. There aren't really many games that can hold a torch to it IMO. There's nothing like having your best friend scream obscenities at you as you drop 2 nukes on his base. Even hearing 'nuclear lauch detected' was a true 'brown trousers' moment!

I guess I've convinced myself on this one. Starcraft. Not just because of the quality of the game but the memories it gives me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

One of the best PC games I played was System Shock 2...very scary and atmospheric. Has new mods out now but they aren't working with my computer.

Of the classics I would have to say Bruce Lee on the old 48k Spectrum! Run around collecting lamps and avoiding the green yamo and ninja. The green yamo could be controlled by a second player...deadly!!

Also Goldeneye on the N64! Now there's a gem...great multiplayer as well. I jury-rigged this four-way split screen cardboard thing that we salo-taped to the TV to block off the other 3 views from each person...worked brilliantly! 2 people sat on the floor and 2 on chairs behind them. Prevented evil 'screen watchers' <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" />

i really appreciate your comment kris as you are not supporting your opinions with anything except a vague sentimental story (like first game i loved...) (i can't hardly say that's an argument <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />)

well that's also true for the rest of you guys... you seem all more or less agreeing BD is not a really good game but anyway no one seems to dare undermine the statement... except with a counter statement (what is not an argument)...
all i see is a list of games you've liked... interesting, i won't deny that but largely <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/offtopic.gif" alt="" /> in an argumentative thread... there is even one of you who was speaking about a game that still doesn't exist... (keep that for a topic in this thread in 2006, Rince... your art has not protected you from time distorsion...)

ok i have nominated BD, beside DD, because of the stat and skill system... still not a perfect one and maybe not a very well used one but anyway one that goes in a very good direction... ok you have the right not agreeing with me... as you have the right not to like really good games...

please koz, consider i was always impartial when i had to judge winner in this thread <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/alien.gif" alt="" />

Oh!!!

A game we can't stand then!

Then that has to be [color:"yellow"] Morrowind .

That was the most [color:"yellow"] BORING pretty graphics game
I ever had the pleasure of wasting my hard earned money on. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" />

Now let the GIT fly! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
