[color:"yellow"] what was the coolest computer game of all time – and why

I can't answer to this question because games are different and i can't say that one game is better than another.

There are two kinds of games : the games i like and the games i don't like.
If i don't have fun playing a game i stop to play.

My favourite games are :

Beyond Divinity
Divine Divinity
Warcraft 1 - 2 - 3
Starcraft
Dungeon Keeper 1 - 2
Final Fantasy VII

BD? Sorry Larian, you screwed the pooch on that one! Tried and tried to get into it but just no interest whatsoever....

I don't agree with you.
It is not because you failed getting into Beyond Divinity that this game is not a great game.
I failed getting into great games and i don't critic them.

@ MG

ok i have nominated BD, beside DD, because of the stat and skill system... still not a perfect one and maybe not a very well used one but anyway one that goes in a very good direction...

Who said that Divine Divinity was better than Beyond Divinity ?

well that's also true for the rest of you guys... you seem all more or less agreeing BD is not a really good game but anyway no one seems to dare undermine the statement... except with a counter statement (what is not an argument)...

That's because liking/disliking a game is the same as everything else. ITS A MATTER OF TASTE! No-one can say definitively that there is a best game ever because everyone will like something different.
If you want an argument on BD fine....

I didn't like it because... no, its not the best game at all because:

Its buggy.

You have to drag around some stupid henchman with you who uses computer AI. BAD computer AI! When he dies, you die. Interesting concept, wholly bloody annoying because of the last reason. (AI)

Ridiculously over-complex skill system. I understood it but saw no reason for it at all.

BF 'random' generation gives empty dungeons. All the monsters fall into 4 subtypes and there's about 2 fricking million of them.

Doesn't seem to go anywhere. I honestly yearned for the freedom of DD. (Personal opinion though)

Yup, all my basic logic arguments fall into the category of:

1)It needs to be fixed.
2)Its badly designed to start with.

Starcraft is the best game ever because:

Its pretty flawless. Simple architecture and design help here.

Runs smooth and sweet. I hate crashes when I haven't saved for hours.

Excellent single-player campaign, free internet gaming with the moron of your choosing...

Good storylines. Outstanding cutscenes for a game of that age.

Addictive, totally and utterly...

I don't take it [color:"yellow"] personally

I agree with you about some points :
BD : I did not like the battlefields.
Starcraft : It is one of my favourite games and i was thrilled each time i heard "nuclear lauch detected".

hmm from my point of view the coolest Game I have played was/is Daggerfall, sure the graphics are dated the engine runs on DOS, but there simply is no end to that game I must have played it so far at least 4-5 times (at approx 60 hours playtime) and there are still avenues of opportunity I have not even breached (on to the breach we go!) so yes for sheer replay and ROLEPLAY value Daggerfall is hard to beat

Since we can't have Rincewind winning again I drag myself out of Neverwinter, in order to SAVE THE WORLD (american styled)!!!

Since we're talking about the coolest and not the best (the bets game ever is fallout 2 btw) I route for:

Max Payne

Why? Since it's the coolest game ever (duh). Ah, why is it the coolest game ever! I misunderstood you at first. Why is Max Payne the coolest game ever? Because I happen to think so, so to me it's the coolest game ever. The game itself is pretty plain (it doesn't have much any other HL-copy hasn't), but the storyline...
Even though it's as linear as it can get, it's great. Pepole say funny stuff all the time (Like betwee two chapters when... well, if you havn't played it, I don't whant to spoil it for you ). Me and my classmates in the upper state (three years) were quoteing it all the time, since there was so many things to quote. If you don't like that kind of game (and I don't, I think it's acually the only game of that genre I've finnished) you could still love Max Payne, who is really more like a great, extremely funny movie than a computer game.

I don't care how much the story justifies it. If its a total pain to play I won't do it!

Hehe, what sort of argument is that? You go from having a nice 'click on the box' system ala DD to this insane plethora of 200 skills?? (or thereabouts)
Come on. As my old boss says, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I guess no-one liked the BF. (apart from me in my much much much earlier posts )

Alright, Barta highlighted 'greatest COMPUTER game of all time' which is a good idea. We should think about which has had the most social impact. Or is just the best remembered. Or has changed how the industry produces games. We're talking about ground-breakers here. Not just ones we liked the best. Pity we didn't include video games.

Come on, who hasn't played space invaders? Pong?

Command and Conquer was a great, it set up the whole RTS line.

RPG and adventure games have been around forever though. I even remeber those good old text-based ones on the BBC microcomputer that I could never see the point of...

Anyway, I'll stick with my Starcraft.

who? me... so if it was a raw rhethorical question that had no other goal that to make an affirm, it is logicaly false... as we all can't take a counter-example: me.

a very good argument. don't you know how to do more than 200 thinks, womble?...

200 is not plethora... i think about 5000 will be a reasonnable number if you could do many things in the same time...

as for the different damages which have been really unfairly criticized...
there is more than 6 or 7 ways to die in RL... much more!

I think you may be confused. This...is...a....game!

Anyway, I didn't even complain about that! I thought the new damage types were cool.

Also...

Yeah, er... you go right ahead and play your game with 5000 skills. I'll be done and getting on with other important stuff thanks very much.

i really hoped that somebody will say that!

historically a game has ever been an imitation of RL life (i can make the difference between a game and RL, thanks) but more the principles of life will be well imitated more it will be a good game...

i said principles of life and not life itself as in a fantasy world actions may be different that in RL but principles are the same...

A good point but too black and white. There is such a thing as going over the top. You can include too much in a game. This is time-consuming and pointless. Especially when said skills do pretty much the same damn thing!

Including the priciples of life is essential. Otherwise you create a totally alien system. Nobody would buy that. There are many games that do it better though. That is the point I'm trying to clarify.

Good discussion MG. I'm off home now though. Argue with some other git till tomorrow!

Some interesting nominations. But most games are immediately forgettable. Wafer thin plots, interchangeable dialogue, and characters whose names you forget as soon as you finish. I've had many games that were fun to play at the time but they passed into oblivion within days of completion.

There’s only one that I still remember in detail. It had excellent writing - depth and drama as well as humour. The graphics are still worth looking at, the characters were weird, interesting and different from each other. The sound effects were good and the voice acting superb. I can still hear the voice of Sheena Easton.... Aaa... And it’s the only game EVER that I swear I can still SMELL!

Coolest computer game ever – no contest – Planescape Torment.

Honestly, read some of the diabloii.net forums. There are people there who can DESTROY you without even reaching for a blowtorch. I think one of the secrets to a good argument is to pick something you know about and stick to it. I also argue far better textually than verbally.

Oh, and if you're wrong. Admit it! There's nothing more embarassing than a loser who doesn't know he's lost.
