[color:"orange"]Nuclear arms. Do we really need them? Will we even ever use them? Looking at the wars raging around the globe have they even helped?[/color]

Thesis:

Indeed, we need them. Their first time use ended a worldwide war with a mere two bombs, thus saving thousands of lifes of allied soldiers at the cost of limited collateral damage on the side of the dictatorial regime, that brought so much evil in four years of aggressive war.

Their mere existence in the hands of the global powers, and the threat involved in their potential use, brought an almost 50 year period of peace to the western civilization - unprecedented in history.

Even nowadays their existence is a threat that will keep any potential user from actually using them, as the global network of alliances will ensure that any user has to fear annihilation as a consequence of retaliation.

Yes, there are wars in many parts of the world, but without nuclear weapons it would be worse, spread farther around the globe. The islands of peaceful living on earth are preserved only by the shield, that the threat of retaliation with nuclear weapons provides.
