It is not well covered, and nobody else applauds you. It is not. This isn't an argument. Its contradiction! (I don't think many other people got your joke Cleg) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> Yes, it is an argument. (They should watch more Monty Python.)

Not it isn't. An argument is collecting a series of reasons to form an opposing opinion of something. Contradiction is the simple gainsay of any opinion. Which is what this is.(can't remember the exact script) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Hakea, sounds like the mindless forces of political correctness strike again... the specious assumption that generation A was short-sighted, stupid, irresponsible, or whatever, and generation B is wise and just and clever... but when generation C comes along, history repeats itself. Nevermind that each generation does the best it can in the temper of its times... Aaargh !!! And we are "Generation X" !!!! What comes behind us ?

MasterGuroth: "nothing new under the sun"? Yep, nothing new - alphabet starts all over again - generation war rages on - disputes go on - nothing new. It's a circle, or a spiral. But I still like Kris' idea of motor cycles without helmets for the old => as long as I get a cycle and can start hunting down the young <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" /> - would add to the fun. After all, we call the young ones in Germany => the fun generation, the fun society. So, yep - Easy rider for all. Kiya

Sez I, Charity is definitely what we need more of in this world, but in the sense of kindness and tolerance, not the arrogant, self-righteous doling out of "assistance" we nowadays so often associate with the term!! << Rincewind's Grump of the Day >>
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Thanks again for some more great stuff from Don Marquis, I've been busy cutting and pasting your post so that I can keep the quotes. Amen to your thoughts above! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> They remind me of a description I read somewhere (can't remember the author) which went something along the lines of: "She liked to do good, and you could tell the people that she did good to by the hunted look in their eyes..." <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Yes, it is an argument. (They should watch more Monty Python.) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" /> I've been had! Nothing more satisfying that taking the mickey out of a mickey-taker. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> Beautifully maintained straight face Cleglaw. Why did it take me about 4 of your posts to cotton on? Senility I guess... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" />

A cycle? A spiral? but both needs a fix point... (even a motor cycle with or without helmet needs that) and what is a fixpoint there? Heideggers ontologische Versucht in Sein und Zeit... bad poetry! unreal sophistication! ach nein, kiya dreimal nein... it goes against all that is obviously real... universe in expansion, mathematical hypothesis of continuum (same elements number between reals a and b than in all the Real Ensemble... whatever are a and b)... No fix point there... and yet Nietzsche was right all is ever returning back!

Kris, the only Marquis books I've ever found in the shops were the archy and mehitabel ones, but I do have a "secret stash" of quotes from some of his other works, and I'm happy to be able to share it with you: Enjoy!

Some nice posts to choose from.... It's been suggested that the time per topic be changed to 2 days, to keep the ball rolling, so I’m going have to pick a winner soon.
Kris certainly isn’t going to get the nod on his own thread (and I’d never hear the end of it..) but the front runners for me at the moment are Janggut’s touching plea for compassion, Rincewind’s comments and superb quotes from Don Marquis (very impressive to know where to find such apt quotes and also take the time to type them all up), and of course Cleglaw’s succesfully taking the p*** out of some of us. Despite my foolishly blurting out what he was up to, it still took me a couple more posts to realise that’s what he really was doing... Doh! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Currently, Rincewind just has his beard in front, but it’s very tight and there’s still plenty of time to get your bribes in.

(very impressive to know where to find such apt quotes and also take the time to type them all up)...Rincewind just has his beard in front Thanks for the kind words, Hakea, but Rincewind is wallowing in guilt and ready to shave that beard rght off! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> After all, quotes are easy; coming up with your own comments (as did Janggut and the others) is hard.... and Rincewind << feeling even more guilty >> has a secret weapon that eliminates the typing of quotes and does not even require the old cut-and-paste trick... because Rincewind is a thoroughly lazy old git.
