Shoot, that Holy Avenger, I think getting past that baddie was one of the few times that something in the NWN series of games was HARDER than that in BGII.
In fact, I think that was the ONLY time something was harder in the NWN series of games than that in BGII.

I must have died a hundred million times fighting that baddie in SoU.

I still had an easier time with my Druid.

Final thought, if RPG'rs out there like a total game challenge, play just the ToB part of BGII.
That is by far the hardest battles I have ever had in any RPG game ever.

bg 2 is tough and it's because the magic system there is terribly skewed in favor of enemy mages that it's borderline cheating already. in addition to that, the armor class system is severely lacking in the baldur's gate and icewind dale series. it's the main reason why i never did finish throne of bhaal.

anyway back to sou. i completely agree with you, getting to the holy avenger is very, very tough and that it's one of the hardest battles in the nwn series. my pally had barely a sliver of life left when he finally defeated that boss. another very tough fight in the nwn series is against a draco-lich in hotu. now that is even tougher. it's chaotic, it's frenetic, but it's fun and definitely beatable.

spoiler:

one of the main reasons why i'm suggesting a pally to dual-wield is that in the last chap of sou, as well as in chap. 2, most of the tough monsters you'll fight are undead. remember the hordes of undead in chap 3 where you have to get one of the artifacts? now if you wield the holy avenger in one hand and the weapon you get in chap 2 that does extra dmg vs. undead on the other hand, then it will all be very easy.

that badass, super tough blackguard w/ his dangerous sneak attacks went down in a few rounds to my pally.

btw, if acquiring the holy avenger is difficult in sou, it's extremely more difficult in icewind dale ii. you have to fight not one, but six very tough opponents, only to find out that the holy avenger there is not that great. my pally just wielded a 2-handed weapon (axe, halberd, or greatsword). two-hand weapons work great in icewind dale ii because armor rating there just isn't worth it; no use equipping a shield.
