The game saves to a temporary folder first (with a .tmp extension) in case there is a problem during the save process (bug, power failure...), rather than delete a presumably working save. Once that finishes, IIRC it should delete the old save and copy the files from the .tmp folder (I used the freeware program
Filemon to check the save procedure some time ago).
A few other people have run into this problem. One fixed it by updating their BIOS, another just stuck to quicksaves to avoid it.
