I touched on it in passing, but I really love the fact that we have automobiles nowadays.

I drive, round trip, 124 miles = 199.6 kilometers five days a week just to work and back home again.

What would your life be like if you didn't have a car?
I sure wouldn't want to travel that distance horse and buggy everyday.

I don't have a car. You could try and take the bus, like I do.

I did that once.
It was a very boring 10 hour ride.

Two miles (one mile= 10 km)= ten hours ? It takes me 20 minutes to go from here to centrum, but thats only 5 km (eg 1/4 of your distance).

No, when I took the bus I traveled over 200 miles = 321 Km.

The bus also stopped at what seemed like every city along the way.

Very, very boring.

Doh! I swear to the gods I work 10-15 minutes (driving time) from home, this takes like 45 minutes by bus or train taking waiting in consideration, like Kyra I did that once ...... never again, so instead saved all my booze money and bought a Mercedes ... much more comfy

Erm, no wonder the bus took some time, but on the other hand I didn't mean you should take long trips by bus.

Are you still hankering for the Audi TT that you mentioned in another post? I had a drive of one a few weeks ago, and very nice it was too.

It belonged to a friend who kindly insisted that I have a test drive. Unfortunately, it was in the city, full of kerbs, traffic and fussy little roundabouts, whereas I'm used to driving more in the countryside. So I was terrified the whole time - and did all the usual nervous things like trying to indicate with the windscreen wipers.

Nicely made and finished, but somehow not quite me. I think I'll stick to what I've got.

Not just yes, but HELL yes I still want an Audi TT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh the round abouts.
I remember those well, the short year I was living in Bermuda.
Such a wonderful lovely place. (sigh)
The water was so clear it looked only 10 feet deep.
When it was really over 200 to 500 feet deep. (ah...sigh again)

@ janggut => Offtopic...
As if I haven't done that myself several times already.

@ Lew => The original Audi TT comment
I originally made that wish comment when I mentioned Halloween and Ube mentioned Christmas and then I said something like...Ohhhhh, Christmas!!! I want an Audi TT Quattro!!!!

Interesting that my friend with the Audi TT is also a woman. I wonder if there is something about them that women particularly admire? Certainly they're very nicely finished, and kind of sleek and muscular.

A bit out of my price range though. And an old codger like me needs a more sedate 'Gentleman's Conveyance' too.... It's not quite a Mercedes or an Audi TT, but it's still a lot of fun...

My Gentleman's Conveyance

BTW, Bermuda sounds almost as nice as Australia.

Oh, decades older I'm sure.. I'll be 58 next Friday (12th) - so plenty of time for last minute present shopping folks.

But as this has fast become the "Everything is off topic" thread, here are some quotes to doing with language (weren't we talking about languages, and misunderstandings, a page or so back??).

Anyway, I love the direct way that kids often use language - in much the same way as person from another country might not quite get the right meaning.

I was in the shower the other day and my young son came in and had a good stare at me. Eventually he said thoughtfully "Dad is very skinny!"

Now, I'm far from obese, but nobody would ever call me skinny - so why the comment? But we eventually clarified it. Normally I have my clothes on, so I don't show much skin. In the shower it's all skin on show - so by kid's logic I was "very skinny".

And another day he was intently watching the water run out of the bath. Wanting to express that the water was disappearing, he shouted excitedly:

"It's getting goner, it's getting goner"!

And one from a friend's little girl. She had been asked to help by holding a handful of nails - without dropping them - while Dad hammered. But he noticed that a steady trickle of nails was hitting the floor. "hey, you're dropping the nails" says Ken.

"No I'm not dropping them" she said solemnly "they're falling...."
