@bernhard : Yes, Gothic 2 is definitively on my list, but I must be able to afford a new PC first, and I don't know when that will be.
I didn't explicitely say that it's action-oriented, but you need to fight a lot to get through G1 ...
What's absolutely positive about the game is the immersion ... I don't know much games with such a deep immersion. I saw G2 for $10 and bought it -- I was unsure how it'd run, since I really did not meet the processor requirement; I didn't care, only $10. If it didn't run well, I'd put it on a newer PC, when I get one. I really do want a new PC, too -- this thing is getting old. But, G2 still runs fine. I don't know how old your rig is or what you got, but my PC I have had for 4 years (which I have upgraded the RAM and vid card on) runs it decent. I got Gothic 2 running on 800x600x16 w/ most of the stuff set on half or a little more for models and texture details. Distance is around 40% on objects and 60% on drawing distance, I believe. It runs fine on those settings for me. In case you're wondering what kind of rig I got it running on, my PC Specs: AMD Athlon 700 Mhz, 64 MB GeForce 2 RAM, 384 MB RAM, 10x DVD-ROM, 52x32x52 CD-RW drive, 40 GB HD, Win 98 SE. If you got anything around like what I've got or even better than what I have, I'd definitely give G2 a shot on that rig. Likelyhood, if those settings sound decent to you, it'd be worth your time.

guys, how does the gothic 2 interface & controls look like? is the interface clunky? is movement done via mouse or w,a,s,d keys? because if it's the latter, it'll really turn me off from playing the game, no matter how good people say it is.

Gothic is 3rd person but fully 3d. You use "wads" keys as well as the mouse for control. The interface looks a bit oldfashioned. They held it the same as in Gothic one.

You can use the Arrow Keys too. And the "Cntrl" and the "left ALT" Key.
I use the Mouse only for looking up or down.

I think the speed of the CD-drive and the amound of HD space are not so important for the game, but yes, I've got enough of that.

I looked for both G1 and G2 yesterday and all I saw was G2 at the stores.
Monday I will buy both on line.
G1 got an 8.1 review out of 10. Quite impressive.
Do all of you think it is that good? What are some of the flaws?

Maybe you have some problems with your System, this are the same like every other Game. But i`m sure, in that case, we can help you.
Generell, i think, G1 is very Bugfree, only little things.
For example, there was a ladder in this Game, which is not easy to climb at the top in the next room. But there are some solution for this little Problem, so its dosn`t matter.

Gothic2 interestingly had much more bugs than G1, so downloading the patch for Gothic 2 is essential.

The Silent Storm: Sentinels chat with Nival and JoWood has a brief, passing reference to the Gothic 2: Addon...don't get too excited but it's a small start: Arach: Will Gothic II : Night of the Raven be published in the UK, US? Additonally, anything on Gothic 3? JoWooD: We are working on that =) Gothic 3 will come at end of 2005 Thanks again, Slaughter. source [Editing] Toihlsa website in English 04.11.2004 | 13:46 The Toihlsa mod team recently released an English version of their website. Toihlsa is the name of a planned modification for Gothic II. Their well designed website contains for example various screenshots and the beginning of a tour through the world of Toihlsa.

[Editing] Public beta for the Gothic modification "Diccuric" 29.10.2004 | 16:58 TAGMT (the amateur gothic mod team) is currently working on an English translation of their successful Gothic I modification "Diccuric". So they released a beta lately in order to get help in finding all lines that are still left in german.
How to install it: The first thing you need to intall is the Player Kit (follow the link below). Then download the german install file of Diccuric (setup_diccuric.exe) and also the patch 1.1d from the same site. When you've installed all of this files extract the English beta. Put the ini files into your gothic/system directory and the .mod file into the data/modvdf path. It's very important to use the GothicStarter to launch Diccuric and Gothic in future. source Diccuric is the best private Mod i ever have see. Maybe a little buggy, but in fact the best G1 Mod. Diccuric has a big complet new World, new Story, new Charakters. There is nothing from the G1 Game. And they use the Textures from G2 in the engine of G1, look much better.

Thank you Stone & Bernhard for all of your help.
I bought both G1 & G2 at Amazon today. I should see them in about 7 to 14 days.

I do know that Gothic 2: Night of The Raven has been out in Germany in German, but not anywhere in English.
Though, I do know there is a mod that someone made to throw in English subtitles & a few thnigs you have to do if you want to play The German Version of NOTR w/ English Subtitles.
I just hope Jowood puts Gothic 2:NOTR out in English sometimes before G3.

Well that is the advantage when you live in Austria... The headquarters of JoWood is just an hour drive from where I live...
(back on topic:) I didn´t know that "Night of the Raven" wasn´t translated into English and I´m ery confused abut this. Gothic 2 was a major title all over the world, why do not sell the addon??
