In G1 you need, most of Time, only the Arrowkeys, and the Ctrl Key.
In the beginning it is normal to run away. You have to search so many easy Monsters like Scavengers, and Molerats as possible.
But maybe it is that those generally Tips, do not help you.

Last month i will help an other (german) Forummember in this Way to solve G2.
I can give you some hints, where you get EXP, and if you need some spoilers.
The most imported thing to know is, that the most Areas where are the bigger Monsters, are Areas which will be later in the Game neccesary.
In Gothic you can get better Armours only if you coming in a higher Act. Normaly there are two Armourlevels in one Act (not in the lasts Acts, but in the first fours Acts)
And if you dont have the right Armour for this "Act Area", you have no Chance to beat these Monsters. Maybe one with a good scrool, and an other with a good strategy, but not really.
So, you cant enter all Areas at the beginning.
Then, an other importend thing is, you can solve all Quests to be a Member in the different Camps. Doing this, will bring you many more EXP, if you only solve the Membershipquest in one Camp.
And there are some hidden Quests.
