Try one of the following:
1. There is a microsoft patch that helps prevent the crashing to desktop. You can download it

Direct X 9.0c AFter you install DirectX 9.0c, Click on "Start" -> "Run" and type in DXDIAG (and press enter). Run all the tests in this program and see if it finds anything wrong.
3. Sometimes other programs install on your computer without you knowing it, they often cause problems with games. Download
Spybot to find them and remove them from your computer. This is a very handy program.
4. Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game?
5. Try to run the configuration utility from "start" -> "Programs" ->"Larian Studios" -> "Beyond Divinity" -> "Configuration Tool". See if that works and after that try to run the game again.
