Did anything happen between the events?

No.

Sorry, I will have to answer in several posts now - it is so much and I want to quote in order not to produce too much confusion.

The story is actually very simple, but I like your guesses! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" />

Was the man after the water a customer? We he an employee of the bar? Was he masquerading as an employee of the bar?

"The man after the water" - I don't really understand this expression but I guess you mean the man who goes into the bar.

A customer: Not important.
Employee: No.
Masquerading: No.

Ok here's my little guess: the barkeeper used a watergun/ postmix device

No. It's a real gun.

Probably not correct, but is it any more outlandish or lateral than the 'real' answer?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Good story! (The dying pet rat...)

Answer: Yes, your story is more outlandish - the real explanation is pretty simple.

The 'gun' is one of those cigarette lighters that produce a flame from the end when you pull the trigger. The barkeeper just lit the man's cigarette for him.

No.

Quote
Did the barkeeper and the customer know each other before the incident?

Probably not, but it doesn't matter.

Quote
Did the barkeeper intend the gun to be a threatening gesture? i.e. a threat to shoot at the customer?

A little hard to answer. In a way, yes. But this may be misleading.

Quote
Was it a real gun, loaded with bullets?

Yes, a real gun. If it was loaded is of no importance.

Quote
Are any of these factors relevant:

The historical time of the incident?
The time of day, week or year?
The state of health of either the barman or the customer?
The relationship between the two (blood relation, friend, enemy or whatever)?
If I knew what either or both were wearing would that help? (i.e. uniform or identifying clothing).

Time: No
State of health: Yes
Relationship: No
Clothin: No

Quote
Is it essential to the story that he asked for water, rather than another drink, or other item?

Yes

Quote
Could it be re-written, with the same basic idea, but using something other than a glass of water?

Yes

This probably seems contradictory, and the above "yes" is a little shaky... He might ask for something else, but in a bar the glass of water is the most logical choice.

Quote
Is it necessary to the story that the man leaves the bar after saying "Thank you"?

No

Apologies for asking so many questions at one time, but with the time zone difference if I ask them one at a time it will take me months to guess. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

Did he get his glass of water? And does he carry some kind of infectious disease?

Thanks for taking the trouble with all those answers Sveltje. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

So many questions, and only a few "yesses"! And I don't have much idea what to do with them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" /> It's late at night here now, so I'm off to sleep, but some more questions first:

Is the barman the one with health problem? Or the other man? Or both?

Is money an issue? (i.e. the man asked for something that is not usually charged for).

Would it help to know the exact nature of the health issue?

Is it any of the following:

Gunshot wound or other wound from a fight?

Other wound from war - such as chemical warfare or nuclear?

Cancer?

Old age?

Nasty pimple.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

And is the man carrying something (or have something with him) that the barman can see, but which we don't know about yet?

A couple more before I fall asleep at the keyboard..

Was Alrik right, and the man was a detective? Or maybe a spy with a code phrase?

If not would it help to know his occupation?

Did he take the barman's gun with him when he left?

Something is missing here. Is it:

More words between the two that we haven't heard yet?

More objects that we haven't seen yet?

Or just more story that we haven't figured out yet? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

None of these. Little hint: In a certain way, the pimple is closest to the truth <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

No. (In a way, yes. But this answer may be misleading. He is not exactly "carrying" something.)

Thanks Sveltje! GOTTIT!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Great puzzle <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I must admit that I had some help from my wife. For the past few minutes I'd been telling her the story and my questions and answers. "Hmm" she said <span class='standouttext'>Spoiler : </span><span class='spoiler'>"it must be something that a gun and a glass of water might have in common"...</span>

A few minutes later she burst out laughing and said she'd got it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohh.gif" alt="" /> and that it was indeed very simple. It took me a few more seconds, and no more clues, but then I got it too.

Thanks for your patience and hard work. Got any more please?

Yes, that's it, Kris and übereil. I absolutely love this riddle, because it is so simpel and if you get the idea you are instantly sure that that must be the solution. It made me laugh out loud when I finally got it.

Maybe someone wants to continue asking and guessing?

And does anyone want to pose another one? I like guessing, too <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> - but I am afraid I already know most of them.

Unfortunately I don't think I know any. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" /> I'll try and see if I can make one up, but I don't think I'd do as well as the last one...

Ah, I've just half remembered one that was something to do with a bare room that had been locked from the inside. When the police broke in there was a dead man hanging from a rope in the middle of the room (noose round the neck). He was a few feet off the floor, but there was no sign of a struggle and no furniture. You are also told that there's a pool of water on the floor (and no windows or exits/entrances other than the one door). Not really a very good one though...

I expect most of you will know that one, so here's a clue and the answer for anybody just flipping through.

Hint:
<span class='standouttext'>Spoiler : </span><span class='spoiler'> It was suicide, but what did he stand on? There's no chair or box to jump off </span>

Answer:
<span class='standouttext'>Spoiler : </span><span class='spoiler'> a block of ice, that melted later</span>

Any more from anyone? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

Good one, Sveltje! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Next puzzle:

A man runs to a corner, he turns the corner and runs toward the next corner. There is a masked man there. The man turns around and runs back to the first corner.

What's the story?

Questions to HandEFood:

Are these 'special' corners in some way? (i.e. would any corners do - in a corridor, on a city block or whatever?)

Is the type of mask important? (I.e. Halloween style, ski mask, ice hockey mask, lone ranger type mask, or whatever...)

-------------------------

And here's another puzzle:

A man was born in 1975. Sadly he died in 1952, aged only 25.
