How well you can deal with Vhailor actually depends on your charisma and either Int or Wis being pretty high. If you have too low a score in any of those, you definitely should not talk to him about his past with you. Otherwise, there are a lot of EXP to be earned. He will want to punish you for your sins, but a smart and charismatic character can convince him that you are already paying, at which point he will not attack you.
He's a very powerful fighter, second only to Morte (With the best magical teeth) in the game.
