I was planning to order my PC end feb:

A. prices might go down
B. Hard disk 16Mb cache with native SATA and DMA from maxtor
C. did I mention prices going down

But still, with a conection on 8 Mbs I SHOULD have a higher connectionspeed than that. I SHOULD be downloading in about 500 kB/sec, not 50. I'm currentlly trying to download FIFA 2005, with wire, I had a speed at about 100-130 kB/sec, but for some strange reason (I blame my brother, who is surfing on our old computer...) it is now down in 30-50 kB/sec (mostly 30, but I've SEEN it over 50 in this slow period).

I'm starting to realize now that when my father bought a router and said it was for me, it was really for himself, so he wouldn't have to draw a wire. I obviouslly (now) don't earn ANYTHING on it. The only result is a bottle neck in my reduced connectionspeed (if I plan to play Guildwars later on I NEED a better connection and the optimal solution is to return the router, and draw a wire. Now that I think of it my fater payed 800 kr ($100) only to escape some minor work, AND to get me a slower connection.).

Übereil

PS wirth the current speed there's THREE hours left! Whaqt the hell is he doing down there? DS

It could be capped by your provider also it depends to what server you connect to. I can download files at 500Kb if I stay inside the network of the provider otherwise it take a bit longer remember e connection is as strong as its weakest link.

Picky .
I didn't know there were already nForce 4. Do they use the same audio chip as the other nForce cards?

Well, so far I am happy with what I have. It's mid-range system but with a Radeon 9600 to x800 it should be fine. Well, not that the puny GeForce FX 5200 was below my expectations (in fact, it by much exceeded them).

@ morbo

I have no idea if any factories were damaged in tailand... but computer prices MAY just rocket because of a factory being damaged in the earth quake...

Abotu 5 years ago there was a hurricane that hit them, memory prices shot up to 5 x the price they used to be, and took 3 years to drop back down to normal price....

just check....

All I know about the Nforce 4 is that it will be out either it had been for 3 weeks up to in 3 weeks it will be out.

It had dual video cards.

Dual processors.

Pci express for Amd/64/xp!

8 channel sound ( I think).

Anyway, sounds good.

Yes, i was referring to Taiwan, but after i went on a mission to find out who / what was damaged, i am glad to say that i couldnt find any reports of factories damaged

Samsung, LG, Kingmax, Adata, Gigabyte, Asus, Mitsumi, Toshiba, all those places gave reports that they were unaffected. (and since most of the factories are all located in teh same area, i would presume that the rest were also unaffected)

@ lews, the board has been released 3 weeks ago, according to the articles, and it already appears on my pricelists (though i never noticed it before - i suppose i wasnt looking for it at the time) I posted a link to the specification site from gigabyte earlier in this thread. I can assure you i am fairly annoyd that i just bought a new 64 bit Computer, and now i want to upgrae again.... (at least most of my clients love 64 bit, so i will flog it to them and buy the new board for myself )

May be so, but when my friend (who's studying IT at John Bauer (a school referred to as the computernerdfactory), so he knows what he's talking about) reffers to my speed as "the slowest he's ever seen" and tells me I can't play online whith this speed because no one will have the patience to play with me, I get SERIOUSSLY worried. Since my brother is online, I have a 50-200 kbyte (don't know what unit that is) connection speed, and this test meshures the TOP speed, not the minimum/averange etc. And anywhay, when I was on a wire, the speed when someone else was online beat the wireless topspeed when NO ONE was online. Why do I realize how much better it is to have a wire NOW???

Unfortunately wire is just still much better... no packet loss, almost no interference, higer speeds etc..... Wireless was created for mobility, not speed, and not stability either

This doesnt mean that you cant bypass the wireless.... Get your father to run the cable, and just disable the wireless card, while you use the wire Lan (its not even a must to disable the wireless, you can use them both together, or the wireless can just idle while you go mad on Wire) (your computer has onboard LAN in any case, so no new hardware required)

And the big problem is that I realized this four days too late...

The thing is: my fater has payed 800 kr for a router ie to don't have to draw a wire, so he's not going to draw a wire. Too much work, and he's anot the one suffering from me haveing to stick with a shitty connectionspeed. And since the only thing he does on the net is playing on horses he doesn't realize just how much I will suffer.

I will go to the store and check if my father can return the router and get his money back. If he can I will start opperation:persuade. I will let him know I NEED wire to get the speed to match my computer. I'm not shure I will sucsess, but I have to try, since I'm the one that need high speed connection, and I'm allso the one that will have to suffer. Drawing a wire is a one-time job, and it will really make my computer more effective.

PS Nice case indeed, Morbo . Myself I took among the cheapest I could get my hands on, and it works DS

Now my connection is settled, more or less. When I download or play I can use a wire. I'm pretty happy, my father's happy (for some strange reason, he's spent 900 kr for nothing really...), everyone's happy.

My connection ws as good as it could get wireless btw. If you concider geting wireless, don't get it if you can avoid it. You might think you'll save time not haveing to draw a wire, but you'll only loose a LOT of speed when on the net (gameing will be slow as h... It will be really slow).

I can download huge files in secounds, go online in milisecounds.

Lews.... i have the feeling we are refering to 2 different things here....

You mention connecting to the net... which makes me think you are talking about a wireless internet connection... (to make this more clear, you have a wireless modem with a wireless broadband connection to the internet)- I have no idea of which companies offer this in your country, but in SA its companies like Sentech, I-Burst, 3G.

What we are referring to, is a normal cable/DSL modem/router working with wire.... but your LAN is wireless, so you have a wire to the internet, but no wire between your computer and the router/pots/modem.

The latter is the problem with speed.

True a wireless router is slower than a wired, however with a DSL speed of 3.0mbps like I have, a wired router wouldn't make a big difference.

And Lews, how much do you pay per month? And what is huge files (downloaded FIFA 2005 som days ago, it took three hours, WITH wired ADSL).

Übereil

PS sitting on my old computer feels WEIRD . The screen is small, and it's leaning backwards... The mouse is small and unshaped, and the keyboard is even smaller... DS

I pay nothing!

DOwnloaded? Without paying?

Huge files? They go quickly, at most an hour and a half: at most.

------

Ok, I need a new graphics card. Eventually I will get a new computer that will have

Nforce 4
Amd 64 3200
1 gig of 3200 ram
X800 XL or Geforce 6800 GT Not sure which, I will get the X800 if ATI comes out with it.

But for now I just need a new video card, not too much. I've been looking at one card, the ATI 9600 XT, not sure if I should just get the original, or get a Saphire or Diamond or XTASY with 256 mb of ram instead for about same price.

ALso looking at
Geforce 6600 GT. Price isn't an issue for either ( unless someone has seen something on a good site for cheap amount ).

I'm wondering though if maybe I shouldn't get the 6600 even though its faster, because of how its more expensive, and that is just more money I will have to regain for when I get my new computer. The New computer isn't real soon, probably late summer.

Any ideas/help?

Thanks, Lews.
