I'd get a amd over intel for gaming, cheaper and faster. For half life 2 the amd 3000 was beat only by the 3.8 intel for fps. Also maybe a different graphics card? Maybe a plain 6800 or a 6600 256 mb. Thats all I can say for now.

Ok, changing of plans according with Lews:

ATHLON 64 3000 1.80GZ 512KB BOX (Athlon 64 - Socket 939)
GEFORCE MSI 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 (128Bits) TV/DVI PCI EXPRESS BOX
KINGSTON 1GB (512MBx2) PC3200 DDR400 VALUE DUAL
HD SATA 200GB Seagate 3200822AS 7200
Mother Board K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI

I think its better now, since is 64 bits technology.

About the 256MB video card, hard to get - here the price increases over 1000 in local money.

Even for the 6600 256? Usually that is a bit less then a 6600 GT here. hmm.

I notice you changed the memory also?

almost the same price but i'll get the GT.

Yes i changed the memory cause motherboards for Athlon 64 - don't support DDR 2 - i forgot to put at the corsairs memory that is DDR 2.

What sort of power supply is needed these days to be running a tippidy top machine? Is 480 enough or is the 560 going to be a lot better. But it has no LEDs!

True Blue

560 Maniac

Similer prices, and I'm not sure how to compare them. Any help would be appreciated.

hmm Lews personally I would go for the Thermaltake 560 Maniac .. as both PSU's seem to rate favourably anywhere I have read, I would take that one, cause you can never have to much power, however having said that it would depend on the noise level and taking a guess I am sure that the "maniac" is the quieter of the 2 IMHO

The 460w should run almost any computer.....

It just depends on what you want to put in the computer....

Lets say the computer has the following in...

2 x HDD
2 x CDR / DVD WRiters (well any optical drive)
The standard stuff like MB, CPU, graphics card etc
USB devices etinfinitum (lots - for those who feel as mentally chalanged as i currently do)

Pretty muchly a DECENT Pc, with a little more than the regular amount of peripherals crammed into it... and yea you can add as many cathodes as you can FIT , can run on a 460 w PSU

If you want to run 8 x HDD, 11 DVD roms etc..... go for the stronger ones!!!!

I have a 450w PSU in this Pc, and i am running:
2 x HDD, 2 x OPtical drives, Graphics, Extra Gigabit LAN, 9-in1 Card reader, USB scanner (pulls power ONLY from PC - no extra power plug), USB powered speakers, External HDD (also pulls power only from USB), USB lazer trackball, USB Pen tablet, USB Video decryptor...... and its only running on 35% power usage....

FYI I almost forgot have my pc for 3 weeks now.

works like a charm (take that crashing laptop)

Well to bad the nvidia firewallis a but buggy, installed a software one till they update it cos it's a buggy piece od feces the nvidia firewall. At the lan party I realy put it the test by leeching all 6 cd of Debian (100mbps and netwerkmonitor went over 100% wow (its a Gbps card)))

real happy of the new pc. My one sorrow is that I have super silent componets (cpu temp stays under 40° (even when stressed (maybe I'll overclock a bit))) but the fan of the SU is a darn airplane.

Well it's a real mean calculation machine (finally I can run 3Dmax with out craching every 5 min)

Looks good to me Gal, although I think the vidcard might be an Nvidia 6600, but otherwise I think and D2 should run just fine

You guys...
I don't think gaming is what gal's hubby had in mind.
I think he's more interested in imaging software and storing large image files.
It looks ok to me gal.

Thanks Seth, thanks Mea

I only want to share this info with you guys, because every time I tell someone we get another computer, I have to explain all the technical stuff and I'm really not good in that.
Nothing more, nothing less

IRRC someone on this forum gave me a link to a pretty good site with a computerdictionary where you could look different terms up. The problem is that I can't find that site now, when I need it. So if anyone can remember the adress to that site (or any site that seems to fit in the situation) I would be very gratefull .
