I have a dwarven fighter with engineering skill, but mainly only for the latter - I personally am not much into the melee classes.

As to mage - yeah!; or warlock - am playing both with pleasure.

The mage is the greater damage dealer, both are fragile in having only cloth armour.

Ultimately, as personal preference, I tend towards the warlock. One reason being he gets his riding animal at level 40 as a quest reward, and not for an abundance of money (so does the paladin, btw). Also his conjured pets are a great support during soloing, respectively increase damage output in a party.

I have undertaken to acquire armous sets from leatherworking guys (or the auction house) to enhance the cloth armour - and I would recommend looking into the enchanting skill, as it allows to further enhance armour worn.

As second profession either tailoring (though for other than making bags, it's not really worth the effort, since you need the cloth found for first aid skill, which both mage or warlock should be skilled in). The items to be purchased or found are generally better than what you can make yourself. So I would rather pick a 'collecting' profession in order to make money - as money you need constantly to buy spells (for the warlock even more, as you also have to buy spells for the pets). If you go for warlock, you should learn at least one other weapon skill (sword or staff).
