You should not be able to do the second summoning test before completing the first one, so that is probably what it preventing Nixfix from bringing up the root/mushroom.
You could swap
inventory files to get the root, though I'll have to reload a save at that point to get them. If you can complete the second test and move on, then you would just miss a bit of experience not completing the first test.
