Did you see "Les parapluies de Cherbourg" in french ?

Oui. Con subtitulos en Ingles. Such a movie wouldn't work if it were dubbed.
@ Cleglaw
The funny thing about this movie is :
even the original version in french is dubbed.
The main actors Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuevo did not really sing they were dubbed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shhh.gif" alt="" />
It is the same thing for the next musical movie of Jacques Demy : "Les demoiselles de Rochefort".
The main actors did not sing except Gene Kelly of course.
A modern movie that I loved was...
Le Pacte des loups
Also Known As: Brotherhood of the Wolf
I watched it subtitled in its original French form at the theatre and Wow was it an awesome movie!!!
I later watched it dubbed in English at home, but the movie is very bad dubbed in English.
You lose out on all of the wonderful voice tones and passions expressed in its original French form watching it dubbed in English.
I own the movie now on DVD and I only watch it in its Original French form.
It is a wonderfully made move. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

I agree with you "Le pacte des loups" is a great movie.
I don't know why the american people are not good to make dubbed versions of movies.
In France the dubbed versions of movies are quite good.
The movies and TV series are dubbed by good french actors and the text is said in the way to fit correctly to the movement of the lips of the original actor.
Actually some french directors prefer to create their movies in an original english version instead of a french version because they want to sell the movies to the english speaking countries.
It is the case of Luc Besson with "The third element" and "Joan of Arc".
