In Sweden, santa use to be a goat. And he wasn't famous for being nice either, even though I think he brought presents. The goat's till there though, and I think Sweden is pretty alone on that point...
And for santa, here we usually put out some rice porridge (porrinde made from rice and milk... It's acually kind of good, eat it with sugar, cinnamon or sirap. And if you change the milk for cream, and add mandarin oranges you'll have another (nicer ) X-mass dish, called rice-alla-malta, or something like that...)

Yea the "nick" was part of the myth i am talking about....
I wonder how something so evil, got turned into a marketing scheme
i know money is evil.... but i think in the time of the myth, kids didnt enjoy being killed.... now they enjoy getting presents, and the parents get killed (by the credit card bills)

I wonder how something so evil, got turned into a marketing scheme If you are thinking along the lines as that urban myth, claiming that Coca Cola is responsible for Santa Claus' red coat, I believe you are mistaken. Saint Nicholas exists for centuries, even before toilet paper and sliced bread. In Sweden, santa use to be a goat. Now that you mention it, Santana does look goat-like...

And he wasn't famous for being nice either, even though I think he brought presents. Reminds me of the German Knecht Ruprecht, mentioned by Stone somewhere ( was in in the "Advent" - thread or here ? ) .

I was not aware that there was a myth about coke being responsible for anything other than causing illness in unsuspecting humans.....
the myth i refered to was the one that santa came to kill / kidnap children... mentioned in this thread...

Ok, to bring some light in Celebration in Germany, Austria, German Switzerland and the Czech Republic In Germany, Nikolaus is usually celebrated on a small scale. Many children put a boot, called Nikolaus-Stiefel, outside their front doors on the night of December 5 to December 6. St. Nicholas fills the boot with gifts, and at the same time checks up on the children to see if they were good. If they were not, they will have charcoal in their boots instead. Sometimes a disguised Nikolaus also visits the children at school or in their homes and asks them if they "have been good" (sometimes ostensibly checking a book for their record), handing out presents on a per-behavior basis. This has become more lenient in recent decades.
But for many children, Nikolaus also elicited fear, as he was often accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht, who would threaten to beat, or sometimes actually eat the children for misbehavior. In Switzerland, he would threaten to put bad children in a sack and take them back to the Black Forest. In other accounts he would throw the sack into the river, drowning the naughty children within. These traditions were implemented more rigidly in Catholic countries such as Austria. In highly Catholic regions, the local priest was informed by the parents about their children's behavior and would then personally visit the homes in the traditional Christian garment and threaten them with rod-beatings. In parts of Austria, Krampusse, whom local tradition says are Nikolaus's helpers (in reality, typically children of poor families), roamed the streets during the festival. They wore masks and dragged chains behind them, even occasionally hurling them towards children in their way. These Krampusläufe (Krampus runs) still exist, although perhaps less violent than in the past. In Czech Republic, Mikuláš is often also accompanied by an angel who acts as a counterbalance to the ominous Knecht Ruprecht (čert).
In the german part of Wikipedia stand something that Knecht Ruprecht is a kind of Devil. But tame. Wikipedia I love Wikipedia, this link go to many more inof about Santa. Santa Claus Wiki too, all about Santa.

In Belgium we originally did not have Santa Claus but St. Nicolas. We celebrate him on the 6th of december and there is also a horrible story linked with it. Once there was this man who kidnapped three little boys and killed them. He sliced them up like meat and put them in a barrel with salt (for keeping the meat fresh). But one day this old man heard the children's cry for help and decides to rescue them. When he came in the cellar of the butcher the children were already dead. But this man, Nicolas was his name, put on some magic, like his collegue Jezus and brought back those children. When this man dead, the church made him a holy man and untill this day we still thank St.Nicolas for his noble deed. So St.Nicolas is not really from Spain, but he lives there because the weather is better for his artitis Isn't Santa (the one we celebrate on 25th of december) coming from "Lapland"?

Since we've discussed the evils of Santa and the Tooth Fairy, what about the Easter Bunny? ![[Linked Image]](http://www.geocities.com/kyra_ny/icons/000523.gif) Kyra_Ny ![[Linked Image]](http://www.geocities.com/kyra_ny/icons/000524.gif)
