I nominate Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War for Strategy Game of the Year for it's originality, tactics over mass-production, great combat, realistic depiction of war and minimalist budget.
I nominate FarCry for Action Game of the Year for it being the first project of a fresh-new company (basically a bunch of German people kicked the asses of all major american studios), for coding the engine from scratch (AI, special effects and physics), for successfully blending stealth action and exploration.
