In general is is possible for your characters or NPCs to jump through walls, though it shouldn't be common (and less so with the latest patch). Alt-tabbing the game was one of the main causes of NPCs shifting through walls, and glitches with path finding can occur with characters following the party leader.
I don't think the kid ever did anything to help me, though he did follow me into the temple once I had access.
