Little rusty on belgian history but wasn't the congo given to belgium by leopold the 2nd. Congo was his own proporty and gave it to belgium after his dead or something. It was basicly given to us by other european contries.

1870s - Belgian King Leopold II sets up a private venture to colonise Kongo.

1874-77 - British explorer Henry Stanley navigates Congo river to the Atlantic Ocean.

Belgian colonisation

1879-87 - Leopold commissions Stanley to establish the king's authority in the Congo basin.

1884-85 - European powers at the Conference of Berlin recognise Leopold's claim to the Congo basin.

1885 - Leopold announces the establishment of the Congo Free State, headed by himself.

Foreigners thinking that whole Germany is like Bavaria.

Isn't a bit true? You have the famous Octoberfest, I once was there as a child. Traumatic, I must say Still trying to coop with it! Everywhere you see those guys with them "lederhosen". Very funny leather shorts, looks a bit greenish and has bands over the shoulders(Bretellen in Flemmish). Funny to see, but funnier when those guys starts to dance, slapping their legs and doing that funny dance Sorry Alrik no offence as you know!!!

We also have the ponti - tower (an interesting ROUND tower of appartments, which they wanted to convert into a prison.... but thank heavens that didnt come to reality )

We have Hellkom... no THAT is unique, nowhere else in the world will you see such a funny lack of telecommunications www.hellkom.co.za

We also have 11 official languages

Swedish. No other country in the world speaks it. Acually a rather beutifull language. Tend to be rather plain though (unless you REALLY know how to speak it).

An entire hotell made in ICE. Don't nkwo if this is unique, but it shure is something... (It's located in Jukkasjärvi though btw (just wondering, did you see the a with two dots over it? Letter 8)).

In the area janggut lives in it's pretty unique.

And the Petronas Towers are known to be the highest building in the world. (452 meters)
The KL tower is placed on a higher part of the city. And that's why it apears to be higher.
Only the WFC in Shanghai is supposed to be/get higher.
When they finally stop changing/working on it.

Yea, we saw the char that is mapped as "0228" unicode

I think the ice hotel is pretty unique....

I think we are the only country that has stupid hi-jackers They are so stupid that the government has to mark the areas for them, just so they know where to lurk and wait (the more accurate version would be, that we have road warning signs on some roads saying "hijacking hot-spot". we joke profusely about these)

For the record: there are about three or four buildings who are supposed to be the highest building in the world. Petronas Tower, Kuala Lumpur, CN tower (some 600 meters I think...), Toronto, and there's probably some more.

[color:"orange"]Isn't a bit true? You have the famous Octoberfest[/color]

You see, you make Alrik's statement true.

There is definitely more than that - the Oktoberfest isn't even unique in Germany - and there are wine fests also.

Unique in Germany? I would say its diversity!

We have 16 federal states, encompassing more than 50 different, though still significant, tribal regions.

From our history after the 30years war, when more than 300 sovereign states (some of which you could walk through in an hour!)were in the region that now more or less is the Federal Republic of Germany, we have the most "residencial cities" in the world in one country!

The kangaroos! No, wait, there are no kangaroos in Austria (and they even sell T-Shirts stating so).

What's funny about my country? The fact that the movie "Sound of Music" is watched by so many foreign people but only scarcly by Austrians. It does not describe us very well.

We got "Lederhosen" and "Dirndl" too, and sometimes we even do this funny dance, so as this is an amusing fact about Germany it is about Austria, too.

Unique is too that often our German neighbours don't understand what we say, although we have the same language.

Definitely funny about my country is our current government (and yes, you would even be amused, or rather BEmused if you are not interested in politics after all). And, while I am at it, our current government certainly is unique in its stupidity. Guess I am not very patriotic...

We also got some mountains, but we do not all live at alps without water and electricity...and we do not sing all day too. And, sometimes, when a kangaroo passes by Mozart's birthplace (which we seem to be very proud of) Austria is probably just a normal place to live...and not the worst too.

You can say all you want about Austria, but as far as I know, Austria has stolen my heart. In wintertime, you have the most beautiful mountains and in summertime you live like Heidi and Grampa and Peter!

Yeah, that's true. I read only a few days ago about a dictionary that contains words which are different in Austrian, Swiss and German language. I mean, basically they speak more or less the same, but this particular dictionary was intended to point out the differences.

Unique about Austria from a German's point of view :

- "Wiener Schmäh"
- "Wiener Schrammelmusik"

I don't know that from Germany.

(Hoping I didn't hit pure clichés ... )

Personally, I consider this rather as "Bavarian stuff". My mother comes from there.

Edit : If you want to get to know more about the Schrammeln, then I can recommend this book :
Die Schrammeln in ihrer Zeit
I've read it myself, and it made a good impression to me.

We went to a small town in Japan about 3 years ago... and i can still remember the amounts of vinigar (or whatever their equivilant is)... at the end of the week, i lived on tea, because i just COULDNT bring another bite of sour stuff close to my face, let alone open my mouth to it.

Its 3 years later, and i still dont eat vinigar!!!!!! i am still sour enough for another 5 lifetimes!!!!
