In Austria we say Hallo, Hi and Servus to friends, formally we would use Grüß Gott!

In Romania we say "Ceau" or "Salut" or "Buna" and when we say goodbye we say "Pa" or "La Revedere" or "Ceau" again.

A friend of mine lived in Siebenbürgen in Romania, a small german-speraking island in that country. Wonder what he's doing now ...

Normally, I would've said "Guten Tag" as greeting, but I like to use the "Moin" which is often used by people in north germany.

The good thing is that although moin originally means "Guten Morgen" -> "Morgen" -> "Morjen" ? -> "Moin" , you can use it not only in the morning, but every day !

@ Alrik: is it only here in Sweden every day starts with a morning? (You can say good morning every day here as well. And yes I know you meant ALL day...)

Goeie môre (good morning)
Goeie middag (good afternoon)
Goeie naand (good evening) - All of these can also be used without the "Goeie"
Haai daar (hi there)
Wees gegroet (be greeted - this is used a lot in religious meetings)

@ Mea

If you think Dutch is a funny language, what you think of these greetings?
Toedeloe!
'navend.
Sluukes!
Jup!
Hoi! and many more...

Toedeldoe is also an afrikaans greeting (mainly used as good buy),
navend is pronounced "naand" in afrikaans (used as a greeting in the evenings)
and Jup is also used, mainly as an informal way of saying yes.

We dont have an equivilant for "sluukes" (please use it in a sentence for me.... so i can figure out what we would use in its place)

Szio is pronounced Chiau here, and means bye (informal)
The closest i can come to Pa, is we often say "Ta Ta" when saying goodbey.

Afrikaans is not far from a lot of European languages (excluding french, spanish, portugese), I can understand many of the languages in written form.... I am lost when people speak it, due to the fact that i am not familiar with pronounciations of the languages.

Yeah, me too. Once got a call from a German from Hamburg. He spoke English (poorlly). I could haredly understand a word he was saying! Note that this was several years ago, AND my father (who is good at English, has speaken it daily for the last 40 years due to his work) had trouble understanding it (it had to do with sports clothes...), but anywhay...
