Selamat Pagi - Good Morning
Selamat Tengahari - Good Noon
Selamat Petang - Good Afternoon/Evening
Selamat Malam - Good Night

all in malay language. Selamat actually means safe but in this context it's good or well. Pagi means morning, Tengahari means midday or noon (Tengah = middle, hari = day), Petang means afternoon or evening & Malam means night. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Selamat Datang! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" /> that means welcome.

kumusta!

it's a corrupted translation of the spanish words "como estas". basically means hello or how are you.

and jang, "salamat" in our language means "thank you".

i'll send a prize to anyone who can guess what "iniibig kita" means in english.

"Hey Jang Kumusta for you." Shyon

hey, no dirty words! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

a silly trivia; in my state (i don't know about the rest of my country since we're so diverse racially, religiously, linguistically), whenever people come over to our house, after greetings we will usually ask the visitors if they have their meals. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> just thinking of the welfare of visitors, u know. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

The internet is a huge library. I found your words in one minute in more than 100 different languages. Nice try. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

My normal greeting i think would be..."All right" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />
and my normal way of saying good bye would be...."Toodle pip" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

On a rather serious note, Larian could include all of these kinds of Greetings into their next game. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> *hint, hint* <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
I think it would be quite good to be greeted from within the game in your own language. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> (Just my thought.)

God morgon (good morning)
God Middag (good (after)noon, bu brother sais god eftermiddag note:efter=after (hard to guess, right ))

Quote
Goeie môre (good morning)
Goeie middag (good afternoon)
Goeie naand (good evening) - All of these can also be used without the "Goeie"

Quote
navend is pronounced "naand" in afrikaans (used as a greeting in the evenings)

We have something similar here in Germany.

In the morning : "Guten Morgen", short form (kind of slang) : "Morgen"
Around high noon : I often hear "Malzeit" because a Malzeit is something to eat. From high noon to 14.00 it is normally time to eat.
In the afternoon : "Guten Tag", short form : "Tag"
In the evening : "Guten Abend", short form : " 'Nabend" (spoken "nabend" or "naabend" , depending on part of the country you are in [influence of dialects] , similar to the quote above <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> )
In the night (if ever <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> ) : "Gute Nacht", short form : "Nacht", with an ch like in "Loch Ness". "Gute Nacht" is normally only said when going to bed at night, because you'll hardly ever meet a person at nicht. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> (Well, at least outside towns <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> )

In short :

Guten Morgen - Good Morning
Guten Tag - Good Afternoon
Guten Abend - Good Evening
Gute Nacht - Good Night

@ Ubs
Afrikaans is not far from a lot of European languages (excluding french, spanish, portugese), I can understand many of the languages in written form.... I am lost when people speak it, due to the fact that i am not familiar with pronounciations of the languages.

Yeah, that's why I sometimes read in the dutch-language forum-part here ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

Szio is pronounced Chiau here, and means bye (informal)
The closest i can come to Pa, is we often say "Ta Ta" when saying goodbey.

I really like how "Ta Ta" sounds. In Romania we use some time "Tai Tai" but not very often. So there are kind a similar.
