CHKDSK is the dos (runs before windows) name for scandisk...

Something went corrupt on your hard drive.... either because of a power dip/surge or because of the harddrive starting to become faulty.

Its safe to run... the reason it wants to run before windows starts, is then it has TOTAL control... and no background programs will try to interupt it...
