Two things :

- Clustering. One cluster of bytes takes up a certain space. If you have a file that doesn't fill up the *whole* cluster, then you have some bytes unused. And you can't use them otherwise, because they are still bound in that cluster.

- Different sizes in calculating disk size by MD manufacturer and others. I don't remember that thing much, but it shows a certain discrepancy.
