I found a beautiful city in Iceland but don't ask me to pronounce it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Hafnarfjörður

I could perhaps help.

The ö is known in German language as an "Umlaut". The Turkish language has it, too.

Currently I don't know any example in English. Must think.

The lettr before the u is actually a relative to the English th . It's a letter that actually existed in early English but has gone now. It's like a rather soft th, I think.

Edit : Example for ö : In "homework" you have a sound that's nearly like an ö, as far as I can judge it.

After getting that knot out of my tongue <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> , I have to say thanx for the help. Of course I allready knew the Ümlaut. In my husbands name there is a Umlaut too. 'Jürgen' <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> But it was that 'soft th' that I did not know. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

No, Gal, that's what we in Sweden calls a german Y, since it is pronounced as a y. Sweden has Ö as well <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />.

Icelandic is the national language.
It has changed very little from the original tongue spoken by the Norse settlers. But English and Danish are widely spoken and understood. Icelandic has two letters of its own, Þ/þ and Ð/ð, which were used in old English. "Þ" is pronounced as "th" in "thing" and "Ð" is pronounced as the "th" in "them".

We don't have that in German, so I can't judge.

I found not W or X and I didn't see a Z.

Gal, I've got an idea. We can visit Iceland on our around the world trip and
experience some of the places we've mentioned. What do you think? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
