Barbie Doll's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts

The record for playing the board game Monopoly underwater is 1,080 hours!

Some toy historians believe the yo-yo was originally used for hunting purposes.

The ingredients of the traditional gooey kids toy, Play-Doh, is still a secret to this day.

Lady Sarah, here is a bit of info on your yo yo fact.

Quote

The yo yo is considered the second oldest toy in history. It has been around
for over 2500 years.

In ancient Greece, the toy was made of wood, metal and terra cotta. The Greeks
decorated the two halves of the yo-y with pictures of their gods.

Around 1800, the yo-yo moved into Europe from the Orient. The British called the
yo-yo the bandalore, quiz or the Prince of Wales toy. The French used the name
incroyable or l'emigrette.

The word yo-yo is a Tagalog word, the native language of the Philippines, and
means 'come back.' In the Philippines, the yo-yo was a weapon for over 400
hundred years. Their version was large with sharp edges and studs and attached
to thick twenty-foot ropes for flinging at enemies or prey.

People in the United States started playing with the British bandalore or yo-yo
in the 1860s. It was not until the 1920s that Americans first heard the word
yo-yo. Pedro Flores, a Philippine immigrant, began manufacturing a toy labeled
with that name. Flores became the first person to mass-produce yo-yos, at his
small toy factory located in California.

Sorry guys, I just had to pass this along after looking it up. Stuff like this
intrigues me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Fact -> Ancient Chinese artists would never paint pictures of women's feet.

And thanks so much for this post. These have always fascinated me.

@ Lews -> And yes Lews. It is really a shame that they no longer exist. It would
be fantastic if we could have had the chance to visit them today.

Fact -> All the moons of the Solar System are named after Greek and Roman
mythology, except the moons of Uranus, which are named after Shakespearean
characters.

That's a good point Shan.... but the real question here is.... Are there rings around Uranus?....

@ Jurak -> Not sure. I have never seen them myself, but Voyager has according to a quote from this site.

Uranian Rings

Quote
The Uranian ring system was discovered in 1977 during observations of a stellar occultation by the planet. The star was observed to blink out briefly five times before the planet and again five times afterward, indicating that the planet was encircled by five narrow rings. Subsequent Earth-based observations indicated that there were actually nine major rings. Working outward from the planet, they are named 6, 5, 4, Alpha, Beta, Eta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. In 1986 the Voyager spacecraft acquired additional occultations and also our best images of the ring system. The Voyager cameras detected a few additional rings and also showed that the nine major rings are surrounded by belts of fine dust.

Now what do you think. Are there rings around Uranus or not? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Fact -> Uranus is the only planet that rotates on its side.

Luna (Roman) = Selene (Greek) => deity, incarnation, whatever of the moon
Artemis (Greek) = Diana (Roman) => (twin) sister of Appollon, aka "The Huntress"

Tsel, are you sure John Gray was correct in that quote. I think he got it mixed
up. I didn't know there were little green people living on Venus. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/alien.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

I dont think anyone has been around long enough to check <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> a couple of billion years.... hmmmmmm, i think i'll stick around till they check <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

@ gal
Yip its been proven over 500 years ago about the wine.... but there is something even MORE scary than wine containing ergot....

in the 1600's most cups and "glasses" / mugs were made of pewter.... now... imagine this.....

Mix alcohol and ergot (in the wine they made... and the ergot value was MUCH higher than today's wine, since they allowed much more mould in the wine) and add to that the reaction that alcohol has with pewter...... + the reaction that ergot has with pewter....(pewter allows free passage to the brain[it has something to do with enlarging the blood vessels, which allows more to travel to the brain].... so ergot had a EXTREME effect on them)

Which is where the term "laying in wake" (i am not natively english, so i may have this saying wrong) comes from.... people used to pass out from drinking wine in pewter cups and fall into a very deep coma.... after they discovered numerous graves with scratch marks in, they made it tradition to lay the person in wake for 3 days...... to see if they wake up....

After that discovery (they still didnt know it had to do with the pewter), they tied a string around a dead person's wrist before burrying them.... the string would be attached to a bell on top of the grave. Hence the saying "saved by the bell".... this also resulted in the dreaded "graveyard shift".

The saying "raining cats and dogs"
also in the 1600's the houses' roofs were thatch, coming very low over the side of the house, and often touching ground at the "back" of the house... the small yard animals (chickens, cats, dogs etc) used to crawl into the thatch because of the shelter and heat it offered.... when it rained though, the thatch became very slippery ... resulting in cats and dogs falling off the roof.

"Bless you"
During the black plague, the pope made it tradition to tell somebody who sneezed , "Bless you" this was because sneezing was a sign of the plague and the person was sure to be near his death.....

now here is an Interesting one.... it may be a little rated... but i am sure that judging from the content i will write here... .no one will take offence...

Where does the word f*ck come from??????

It is actually an abreviation!!!! it stands for FORNICATING UNDER CONSENT of the KING!!!!

In years past people were not allowed to become pregnant without the kings consent.... (in the days of Elizabeth I and II). people who wanted to have kids, had to come before the king, bearing a banner with the letters on: F. U. C. K. if the king approved, they were allowed to have a kid... (i am very glad that i didnt live in those days!!!!)

@ shan

I have the answer to your ancient chinese artists that never painted the feet of a woman....

In the older days in china, it was believed that a woman's feet should be small. The smaller the feet, the "better looking" the woman. If a woman felt that her feet were too big, (or someone in the family felt that way) the woman's feet were BROKEN and bound back with a special shoe, so that when the bone heals, it heals in a crooked, but SMALLER!!!!

So after doing that a couple of times... a woman's feet were never a very nice sight... but as long as it was small, men were happy!!!!
