Actually, the bug being able to cross the lava on your own was fixed in one of the earlier patches.
If you hex teleport yourself back to the island to get the other imp, there will be a cut scene as you leave the intended way. If that doesn't cause any problems, try entering the fire forest east of the village (the entrance is east of the merchant's house). There will be another cut scene when you get a little ways in, which was a problem with some people who found the lava path on their own. If that one is ok, then return to the village and explore there, or do one of the easier areas first (like the north west mushroom forest).
In any case, when you try to leave the village for the first time you will be summoned by a necromancer for a quest, after which you will be returned to the village. Hex teleporting to the island, or into the prison, may also trigger this.
