German may not be as nice as French, ( personally it [german] just sounds like yelling ) but I would love to be able to speak it, and its still a beutiful language in its way.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" /> It depends on how you speak it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

If you purposefully give it an erotic sound it is a very good language and pleasing to the ear. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
I’d get a chuckle every time a German friend of mine would speak to the ladies.
Boy could he lay it on. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" />

@ Ubereil

Do you really think that you could talk in english without learning first grammar and vocabulary ? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Barta

But four years with german and I hardlly knew how to speak? I can tell you, I were a LOT better at English at the same point of my englishstudies.

And we hardlly learnt any vocabulary.

And if I was to live with germans for a year, without hardly study any grammar at all, well then yes, I think I would be able to speak german...

I see many similarities between German, Dutch and English. But there are also traps ... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> (Like the german word "bekommen" for example, which isn't "become" at all ! )

I’ve also noticed some similarities in German and Español in sentence structure.
When you compare the two languages to English “sometimes” the ending portion is at the beginning and the beginning is at the end of the sentence.

I hope that made sense.

It was worth a try. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/kissyou.gif" alt="" />

Besides. In Belgium you need a Dutch and a French part to be PC anyway. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

In Belgium, the dutch speaking people refuse to talk in french, they prefer to talk in english. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />

They don't refuse to talk in french.
They are just (a little) better in typing in english.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Maybe they need a teacher from France to help them talk in french. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />

@ Seth: according to my brother, French pepole refuse to talk anything else than french, when they're with other french pepole. When playing online, his experience was that when there was only one french guy in the party everything was tip top, he spoke english as good as anyone else. Then another french guy showed up, and suddenlly he didn't know a single word on english...

When french people are talking with other french people, why would they have to talk anything else than french ? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

According to myself....
During a long time i was the only one french member of the forum and i used to speak in [bad] english in the english sections of the forum.
Later a new french member came (Master Guroth) and i continued to speak in [bad] english in the english sections of the forum.

You can't judge the french people (or other foreign people) with only one exemple.

1: It was my brother who said it.

2: I don't think it happened once...

3: Because they're with pepole who don't speak french. It's very hard to understand pepole who speak a language you don't speak, and when playing in a party, communication is crusial. And as I understood it, they didn't speak english, despite everyone telling them they didn't understand them.

But on the other hand, there are idiots everywhere. They just seem to have an unordinary higfh concentration in france... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

We Germans have the problem to be bombed with English Slogans (Advertisements, you know). That's why English is quite common here - apaert from the fact that we can learn several languages at school (French, English, Spanisch, even Russian). The easter parts of Germany have a wider spread of the Russian language than the western parts, which lies in Germany's History (BRD vs. DDR).

I had one year Frnech, and I was quite bad in it, so I rather settled into English. It became my favourite language. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Later I learned Spanish, too, but haven't used it since about 10 years ago.

In Belgium (at least the Dutch speaking part) Everything is subtitled and not dubbed so one learns English just by watching tv. Also the Dutch languages relatively takes over English words with ease. Hell I prolly speak better English then Dutch

when somebody told me a joke a few weeks ago I literaly said "laughing out loud" instead of just laughing.

PS: I said speak better English then Dutch that not the same for writing.

I dout you speak better english than dutch too...

Alrik: doesn't Germans dub everything to german? Or is it only me who has gotr the wrong impression?

Just like in Belgium, we hear a lot of english through TV. WE have subtitles as well, but at least it's english. Most of it is American english, and yet they trey and teahc us brittish english in school...

Yes, I've already heard of that, Dutch and Belgian people being able to speak good English, German and anything else because of the subtitles. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

We don't have that here in Germany; instead, everything ( I mean the speech) is translated and spoken by specially trained actors.
