O yes why would you like to learn the original language then a ba$tard dialect.

Americans say 'erbs while English people say herbs because there is a H at the beginning <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Yes, I know. I realized it the first time as I watched the movie which is called "Der einzige Zeuge" (something with Witness) in German (with Harrison Ford) in English (that was in House East Dene, Bionchurch, Ventnor, on our class-tour which eventually took place during the Wiedervereinigung clebrations in 1990. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> ) on English.

It was totally impressive, because everyone was speaking English in the move - except the Amish, who speak an ancient German. It was totally impressive to/for me.

Yeah, that movie! I think I've seen it (and if I don't recon wrong, we had NO subtitles. WE saw it in Englishclass).

And Morbo, the americans speaks english with a more original pronounciation than the english... Some words might be different, but still...

Well in England you go to a film while in America you go to a movie.

I could give you a list of words that are different in English and American English. They are basically 2 different languages.

So keep your trousers on and let's keep it at that.

But the pronounciation has changed less in USA than in England.

A lot has changed in America too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
The "Silver Screen" is now called the "Movies".
But more commonly said is, "let's catch a Flick."
Flick = Movie
That is one example of many as Morbo pointed out.

Say what you want pirate English rules.

Arrgg maties <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

@ube: Would you give me a link that explains American English leans more to the original pronunciation of English. I always thought it was the other way around.

@lynn: move this topic to chat any language section and change topic to the language topic <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

shhhhht Barta
It was worth a try. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/kissyou.gif" alt="" />

Besides. In Belgium you need a Dutch and a French part to be PC anyway. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

In Belgium, the dutch speaking people refuse to talk in french, they prefer to talk in english. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />

They don't refuse to talk in french.
They are just (a little) better in typing in english.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Maybe they need a teacher from France to help them talk in french. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

I even have to quote myself now. What is this world comming to... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />
I was just getting back at Barta becouse in her post she was having a go at me for not posting in French. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

@Lynn
I agree with Morbo. You can move this now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

@Alrik
We get 4 or 5 Dutch tv stations here. And they often have good things on. But I hate that they dub movies.
It looks/sounds so silly when you suddenly hear american actors you heared often before speak in a differend tongue.
And they translate all to German but the names of the cities stay the same and they also still talk about dollars...
It's like <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />
I prefer subtitles any day.
Germany isn't the only country where they do that though.
It's also scary in other languages. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

@Ube
Americans often can't even understand their own language.
There's so much difference between suthern and northern states... And then I don't even talk about fi Cajun or slang. Slang that is different in different states too.
Most of us know the more "decent" american. But I can asure you that I can get lots of americans to talk to you and that you won't have a clue about what they're talking about.
In England prenounciation is important. An old fashion sign of class even. In the USA much less.

To give you a very nice example...
What's the difference between hot and cool?
In USA some ppl will say something's cool while other will say it's hot. And they mean exactly the same. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

And I'm good example too. With my mix of english, scottish and american. And every now and then even a bit of australian. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

*edit*
@Ube... was that your french teacher? None respectable english teacher would say such a thing. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />
*edit*

In Germany we have many different dialects too.

From the Noth (there live the Friesen) to the south (Bavarians)

[Linked Image] Germany

I came from Hessen, and once in the School our Teacher bring an very old married couple, from the Taunus, this is an area in Hessen

[Linked Image] Hessen

just in the near of Wiesbaden my Birthtown.
And nobody in our Class can understand the old People if they start with their Dialect.

And this was in Hessen, and they come from Hessen just like me.

Maybe this shows a little bit of different ways to speak an Language

When i said : "the dutch speaking people refuse to talk in french, they prefer to talk in english."
It was not only for you.
I was thinking about Morbo, the bean, Joliekiller, Viper, Tovi, etc.
I was also thinking about the people i met in the flamish part of Belgium.
Except the people working in the restaurants and the hotels, no other people could speak in french.

Another exemple : joliekiller gave me the phone number of the tourism office at Oudenaarde (toerisme@oudenaarde.be).
When i called the tourism office, it was closed and there was only a registered message in dutch on the phone.
No message in french. No message in english.
This does not help a lot the poor foreign tourists !

The belgium people learn dutch and french at school.
Why do they talk only in dutch in one part of Belgium and only in french in the other part of Belgium ?

Dear Barta

A lot of people in the flemish part speak french. Or try to.
In the walloon (the french speaking) part that's different.
And I guess more and more flemish people refuse to speak french too. Partly becouse of that.
How can you say the flemish people don't try to speak french?
Take our good Lynn fi, how she posted in the french forum. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

And you can't really expect the tourist office in Oudenaarde to reply in another language than dutch.
I think they ware more than surprised to get a call from a none flemish person.
LoL <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" />
Apart from the known big cities and some other places tourism isn't important in Belgium. Don't compare it with France where tourism is one of the biggest sources of income for a lot of people.

But they mean the same in american language!
Some americans would say:
" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> is a really cool game."
And others will reply
"yeah man, it's really hot."

Well I leared chemestri at school to but my knowledge of Chem has deminish (ty teacher for an easy exam)
I think you greatly overestimate the French knowledge of the Flemish. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" />

If you have ever heard me speak French you would ask me to stay away of the French forum.

I'll make a rough translation of what I said on my French exam (the teacher told me what I said)
It was basicly something like

agree not we but you me not is true bad. (yes I was ashamed at the time thank god my written exam was much better)

Personally I like the Brussels dialect it's a strange mix of French and Dutch that everyone understands (the Flemish and the wallonie)

It's kind of like this:

Flemish people don't want to make a fool out of themselves so they see French as a last resort while the French speaking part don't want to make a fool out of themselves so they see Dutch as a last resort.

Basicly understanding and talking/writung are 2 seperate thing.

Also Why do French people talk so fast I can't keep up <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />
