I think this should go for all skills, imho.
But I also think that the player must get an possibility to learn from failures : By kind of a graphical representation for example. Perhaps even with the char saying "I think that wasn't good" or similar stuff.
... I'm just thinking more and more on it ...

If we had for example a potion that's 100 % pure stuff of some sort, then an above mentioned failure could result in only let's say 20 % purity. The rest in the flask is simply water. This could even be made visually by using a darker colour of the same stuff. Let's say a potion of 100 % purity is a clear, bright blue, then 20 % would e a *lot* darker and perhaps contain other colours (water), too !
Of course, a healing potion of 20 % purity would give only about 20 % of the healthpoints back ... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
