Hi again. This is just a little annoyance and was wondering if anyone else experiences this. Immediatly on exit, I get an "Illegal operation this program will now shut down" popup. The game saves properly, the only thing is that when I restart, I have to reconfigure the game settings. I have an old computer. (Pentium III, 450 MH, 312 RAM, Windows 98) which I think is just about the minimum to run this game, so perhaps that's the problem, I shut down everthing except explorer, and systray, but it still occurs. The game run relatively smoothly, if a tiny bit slow, which is nice since there are very few good games that can run on this old and feeble a machine. The error message is not really such a big deal, just a little annoying. By the way, congratulations on a great message board. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/party.gif" alt="" />

One other person that I recall had a consistent crash on exit, and some have had crashes either randomly or under certain circumstances.

Since the problem is not with the settings, you can just click 'no' in the error dialog that pops up recommending that you reset your configuration.


Have you defragged your hard drive lately, or run a ScanDisk? (right click on the hard drive in Windows Explorer, select Properties, switch to the Tools tab, and hit the Check Now button in the Error Checking Status section)

In the Beyond Divinity forum, a couple people reported that RAM Idle helped either with Windows in general or with problems they were having. I use RAMpage, but since changing a couple memory settings, it gets more use monitoring memory than freeing it (it has always been set to manual).

To prevent Windows 98 from using excessive amounts of RAM to cache files, you can change/add a limit in the [vcache] section of the System.ini file.

MaxFileCache=524288

The usual recommendation is to set this to either 1/4 of the total RAM (in KB) or 524288, whichever is less (so in your case, 79872).

Also, in the System.ini file, in the [386Enh] section, add the following line.

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1
