argh so if i install all my maps will be black again?

No, your maps will not be black again.

The black map bug was a potential problem under certain circumstances in the 1.33 patch, which was not available that long. The current/last 1.34 patch fixed that problem, so you should not have any issues installing the patch and continuing with your existing save.

If you want to play it safe, you can zip your saved game folders, install the patch, and then and un-install / re-install without the patch if you run into any problems. Each save is a separate subfolder in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\savegames' folder.

[color:"orange"]It is highly unlikely that you will run into any problems due to installing the patch.[/color]

Just FYI, to zip files/folders in Windows XP, you can open Windows Explorer, browse to the location, select the files/folders Right click and select Send To | Compressed Folder. You could also just copy the saved game folders to another location, but compressing them would save space. To extract files/folders again, you can right-click-drag-and-drop the zip file to a folder and select something like 'extract here' from the menu that pops up when you drop. Alternately, you can double click on the zip file to open it in a folder view, then select the files/folders to extract and copy them.

For Win 9x you would need a third party archive manager (ME has a very basic extraction function built in). In most cases they add options to the context menu mentioning (un)zip, archive or compress/extract. If you do not already have one installed, see this list of freeware archive managers.

It wasn't easy at first, but there were enough annoying 'features' in Windows to motivate me to search tips and tricks sites, etc to find out how to add/remove/change things. Then I started playing around with various programs and utilities, sometime to fill a specific need, sometimes just to play. After that, a hard drive crash (and related problems) encouraged me to learn about hardware....

I have had computer related jobs, but I learned about computers primarily by tweaking, fixing and upgrading my own computer first.
