The city has entered the new Millennium as the region's leisure and cultural capital. With major international events, many new pubs, clubs and restaurants, a massive injection of Lottery money to improve parks and sports facilities in the city, and the region's principal arts and entertainments venues, Southampton is the South's leading leisure destination

Southampton is a major centre for learning. The University was founded in 1952, and has been joined by Southampton Institute, Europe’s principal Centre for Oceanographic Studies and Southampton City College. The city also has ninety schools.

Southampton’s parks make it the Greenest City in the UK.

The city covers an area of 50 square kilometres and has a population of 215,000 people.

Southampton is a thriving modern city but you don't have to explore too far to discover its amazing past. [Linked Image]

Below the modern streets can be found evidence of occupation from prehistoric times to the present, including important Roman and Saxon settlements, and the late Saxon and medieval town and villages that laid the basis for the modern city and suburbs. The unique location at the head of Southampton Water early on became an important trading post and later a port.

Large parts of the centre of Southampton were destroyed during the Second World War. However some important medieval buildings and structures survive, along with buildings dating to the 19th century redevelopment of the town. Southampton's heritage attractions include the Maritime Museum, Medieval Merchants House, God's House Tower Museum of Archaeology and the Tudor House Museum and Garden (currently closed for restoration), and a superb length of medieval town wall.

Southampton has important archives, collections and other sources for local and family history research. The city also has a unique Oral History Unit, recording the memories of local people.
